The United States Coast Guard icebreaker "Northwind" left Seattle for the Antarctic in 1956. The vessel and crew were taking part in a military exercise called Operation Deepfreeze. In addition to its crew, the icebreaker carried a group of scientists who were heading to Antarctica for a year of research. This photo, taken on November 8, 1956, shows military personnel and families saying goodbye to the crew and passengers on the icebreaker "Northwind" at Seattle's Pier 91.
