Summary: | The United States Coast Guard icebreaker "Northwind" left Seattle for the Antarctic in 1956. The vessel and crew were taking part in a military exercise called Operation Deepfreeze. In addition to its crew, the icebreaker carried a group of scientists who were heading to Antarctica for a year of research.
