New Amundsen-Scott Station

This shows the so-called new Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. It was built in the mid-1970’s. I was one of the last people to stay in the old station, building 57, and then the new station was built on top of it. And I was one of the first scientists to live in the new station as well. It was built in the mid-1970’s. I was one of the last people to stay in the old station, building 57, and then the new station was built on top of it. And I was one of the first scientists to live in the new station as well. The new station had a large aluminum geodesic dome, and inside that dome were three two-story buildings where the scientists slept and worked. They had a red tower next to it which was called the science tower. And we were supposed to do our measurements on that. It turned out that it was no good for doing aerosol measurements that I wanted to do because it was contaminated by the camp’s diesel generators and aircraft arriving and pulling up in front of the station. The long tunnel out in front on the end closest on the bottom here: that housed mainly the areas for storage. This part was the storage facility. The little tunnel off to the side was the weather area and the balloon inflation shelter on top of that. The one heading up in the middle, one of the two smaller ones, was the power area. It’s where the diesel generators were stored. The next one over was the hospital region, where they had the medical building and supplies that way. And then the one beyond that was again for storage for fuel and for food.
