The town was named for "uncle" John Hadley who built the first cabin on the site and was said to have been the first man to stake a mining claim on the Kasaan Peninsula. Settlers built a sawmill there 1903 and a smelter in 1905, to handle the copper ore from local mines. The smelter closed after two years, but ore was shipped through Hadley to smelters elsewhere. The sawmill burned in 1915 and a fire closed the principal mine in 1918. The Hadley post office opened in 1912 and closed in 1918.
