Description
Summary:On verso of image: Metlakatla Band? Filed in Alaska--Cities--Metlakatla One of several Indian brass bands formed during the last quarter of the nineteenth century was established in 1879 at the Tsimshian settlement of Metlakatla by pioneer lay missionary William Duncan, who picked up a set of instruments in San Francisco and encouraged a German bandmaster from Victoria to serve as instructor. An early example of Canadian aboriginal music is the Imperial Native March (Whaley, Royce 1907) by Job Nelson, an Indian who organized and led Nelson's Cornet Band and the Metlakatla Brass Band on the north coast of British Columbia about the turn of the century.
