In 1885, he joined the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and became a member of the Alaska Survey Team. While a part of this team, Niblack traveled around Alaska and photographed the native villages of Kasa-an and Chasina. Niblack held many posts during his tenure with the U.S. Navy and collected textiles during his travels.
