Summary:Caption on mount: Looking north from Sea-Ice after blasting. PH Coll 607.3 In the spring, frozen ice begins to break up opening waterways in Alaska waters. This thawed ice can cause damage to the natural environment, man made water channels, piers, seawalls and riverbanks. To help prevent this damage from occurring, explosives are used to break up the ice and create pathways in which the ice can travel.
