Summary: | Handwritten on verso: Kodiak Hotel in 1940ies. PH Coll 683.7 Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the United States. The first non-natives arrived on the island from Russia in 1763. The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 and built Army and Navy bases on Kodiak during World War II. These military bases created a population boom on the island and it was incorporated in 1940. Kodiak has experienced many natural disasters including a 1912 eruption of Mt Katmai volcano and an earthquake and tidal wave in 1964. |
