During the Gold Rush, Dyea was a major destination for ships transporting stampeders. From its location on the Taiya River, prospectors traveled north over Chilkoot Pass to Lake Bennett, where they could float to Dawson City. In 1900, Dyea was abandoned by most of its inhabitants because of the construction of the White Pass and Yukon Railroad (in Skagway).
