In 1895, the Alaska Steamship Company was founded by Charles Peabody and it profited tremendously from shipping cargo, especially during the Alaskan Gold Rush. In 1898, the company formed a subsidiary called the Puget Sound Navigation Company, which gained full control of Puget Sound ferry service in 1935.
