Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) have many distinctive behaviors. Theses cetaceans spend ¾ of their time at depth and few of their behaviors are visible from the surface. This bibliographic thesis deals with what is known, since 2000, on the sperm whale behavior. The first part presents the general behavior and the vertical and horizontal movements. Vocalizations are described in the second part. The third and fourth parts deal with the social behavior and the foraging behavior. Finally, in the last part, we speak about non usual behavior as the defense against predators or the birthing. Researches need to be continued to refine hypothesis on interpretation of the behaviors. Le grand cachalot (Physeter macrocephalus) présente de nombreux comportements caractéristiques. Ces cétacés vivent les ¾ du temps en profondeur et peu de comportements sont directement visibles depuis la surface. Cette thèse bibliographique dresse un bilan sur ce qui est connu du comportement de cette espèce depuis les années 2000. Après avoir présenté les comportements généraux, les différents mouvements des cachalots sont analysés. Les différentes vocalisations, qui sont uniques aux cachalots, sont abordées dans une seconde partie. Les troisièmes et quatrièmes parties traitent du comportement social complexe et du comportement alimentaire s’effectuant majoritairement en profondeur. Enfin, la dernière partie s’intéresse à des comportements rarement observés comme la défense contre les prédateurs ou la mise bas. La poursuite des recherches est nécessaire afin d’affiner les hypothèses sur l’interprétation des comportements observés et enregistrés.
