DETERMINATION OF LIGNIN RELATED PHENOLS BY HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY

Para-derivatives of 2-methoxyphenol and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, as well as their methyl esters, are widely spreaded in nature. They play a role of important intermediates in the metabolism of higher plants, precursors in the biosynthesis of lignin and are formed during its degradation including in the...

They play a role of important intermediates in the metabolism of higher plants, precursors in the biosynthesis of lignin and are formed during its degradation including in the processes of plant biomass chemical treatment. An approach for rapid simultaneous determination of twelve main representatives of the lignin related compounds as well as phenol based on combination of chromatographic separation in isocratic mode using bifunctional facing stationary phases (Zorbax Bonus-RP and Nucleodur PolarTec) and multi-wavelength spectrophotometric detection is proposed. It has been established that the optimum separation is achieved using a mobile phase of acetonitrile-water-formic acid (18:71.5:0.5). Detection limits for the compounds studied are in the range from 1.6 to 21 mg / L. To increase the sensitivity of analysis the use of solid phase extraction of analytes on hypercrosslinked polystyrene is proposed, it allows to determine reliably phenolic compounds at levels not exceeding MPCs. The developed approaches have been tested in the analysis of the real object - wastewater of pulp and paper mill.Key words: High performance liquid chromatography, phenolic compounds, lignin related phenols, solid phase extraction.(Russian)DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15826/analitika.2014.18.3.006 D.V.
