The article discusses the labor market in the Russian North, it is a strategically important macro-region, characterized by uncomfortable living and working conditions. The developing policy was associated with industrial development in the Russian North, therefore the state policy was carried out within the framework of settlement, consolidation in the North. The Russian Northern population was formed mainly due to migration, until the 1990s it was a factor in population growth, but the population began to leave the North in market conditions. Priority of the State Policy Settlement in the Russian North until the 1990s was to encourage migration. This was due to the creation of high salaries. This led to the specifics of labor markets in the North, where high economic activity, respectively, and higher employment. However, the current stage of development of the Russian North is characterized by high unemployment (above the national average), which increases tensions in the labor market. The research objective is to examine the institution of wages and state policy in the North. Studies in recent years indicate a tendency of convergence of northern wages with the average Russian. It is revealed that the factor of discomfort of labor, causing an increase in the level of wages, tends to decrease. From this, the paper describes two possible options for further development in the Russian North, presents their positive and negative. The article used such methods as analysis, systematization of scientific data, comparison of criteria.
