As is now well-known, hundreds ICE agents in riot gear and fully armed, alongside dozens of Iowa state police, descended on this small rural town of 2,000+ residents in northeast Iowa with its moniker “Hometown to the World.” Two thirds of the workers apprehended by ICE that day were Guatemalan nationals, mostly from rural communities in the Department of Chimaltenango where I have conducted ethnographic research since the 1980s on the effects of war and violence on peoples’ everyday lives (Green 1999; 2011).
