This is a rare serotype, historically associated in Canada with imported turtles and reptiles. Within this same time period, 14 States in the northeastern USA began to report cases of Salmonella poona. Further investigations suggest fruit, (especially from salad bar preparations) may be implicated as the infected food source. At least 185 laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella poona have been reported in the U.S. since the beginning of June, and another 56 confirmed cases have been reported in two provinces of Canada, 55 cases in Ontario and 1 case in Saskatchewan. As a precaution, consumers are advised to wash all produce thoroughly before preparing or eating it, and to refrigerate all melon products after cutting or slicing them. In particular, officials recommend waiting until the last minute to prepare any type of fruit salad and keeping fruit salad dishes under proper refrigeration. Consumers should also cut away any bruised or damaged areas in preparing fruits or vegetables, and clean any cutting surfaces used for preparing produce, before they can come in contact with other foods. These precautions should now be considered standard procedure in the handling of produce. Although most consumers still associate the risk of salmonella with meat, eggs and dairy products, a number of recent outbreaks have been traced to fruits or vegetables. For more information, please contact your local health unit. ********************************************************************************************** SUBJECT: SAFETY ALERT - NUK NIGHT TIME HANDLELESS PACIFIER'' MODEL 2503 (4-18 MONTHS) It has come to our attention that the Nuk night time, handleless pacifier, model 2503, has been taken off the market.
