June 17/54. Magrath News, Magrath Trading Co. Ltd., Magrath, Alta, In answer to John Blackmore's pro-Mc Carthy statements, I think it worthwhile to point out that Senator Me Carthy’s actual record of Communists exposed is not worth the reputations ruined, the jobs lost, the suspicion born and the millions spent. Simply to say that Me Carthy is "for America" by no me A Ms proves the worth of his program. The American Bund (Nazi Organization before World War II) was "for America." Even the street corner Communists surround themselves with flags and prattle about being "for America." In countries around the' world, dictatorships, big and little, have been brought into being under the slogan of patriotism. Me Carthy represents a selfish type of political leadership that is contrary to our ideals of democracy. Simply to be "against communism" is not enough, if freedoms and liberties are lost. After all Hitler was against Communism.too, but that did not make his movement more democratic. We cannot fight Communism with fear, suspicion, denial of freedom, and destruction of the constitution. But rather by a new avowal of freedom, a real show that our way is better.than totalitarianism, and a positive program of help to those around the world who find themselves in the want and need that often lures people to Communism. - E. - E.
