Canadian factories have pretty well completed their reconversion problems and, barring the effects of strikes, are generally producing consumer goods in a good volume. Yet there is still a shortage on retail merchants shelves, Why? The reason generally given these days is that the factories are giving preference to export business. There is a great shortage of lumber for much needed homes on the prairies, yet carloads of lumber are leaving the Pas for South Africa. There is a shortage of building papers while the paper mills are exporting pulp to the U.S. There is a tremendous shortage of linoleums due to a lack of linseed oil, yet the government is asking the factories to export linoleums and offering them extra oil if they do so. Men’s bhirts are practically off the market here yet the Minister of Trade, Mr. McKinnon, boasts that Canadian-made shirts are on sale in tjne West Indies, The government has a definite policy of encouraging exports. Not just exports of our surplus production like wjjieat, but of manufactured goods that are greatly needed at home. To permit foreign countries to pay for these exports, it. is lending them Canadian dollars. The loans may or may not be repaid; probably not. The Canadian taxpayer is paying for these goods that he cannot get for his own use, Does it make sende? Not to us.
