The scholarships are awarded to students for achieving an average of 80% in Grades 10,11, and 12. A room and board allowance is available. Our high school golf team recently competed in the zone competition held in Picture Butte and placed in the middle of the pack as a school team. Because of bad weather, the walk-a-thon was held indoors - 132 laps around the inside of the school. Champion speed walker was Thomas Nordquist of the Grade 7 band. He completed the 20 kilometres in 2 hrs. 31 mins. Mr. Chatwin was last in 5hrs. lOmin. Pledge money will be used to fund the purchase of new instruments. • A A A A A A A «■ - . • • Recently I had a phone call from my daughter, Ennyd Pomerleau, who lives in Leduc, informing me that she had registered with the local community band. They were happy to have her because she plays the clarinet and has her own instrument. She confessed she might not be that good now because she hadn't played since school. "What school did you go to ?" was the next question. "Magrath”. "You played in the Magrath Band? Boy, are we ever glad to have you! If you played in the Magrath Band you have to be good because we remember how many times you won in Edmonton and Calgary Parades." We were all pleased with that response. Please phone Dana 7583729 A******* Next Wednesday the 26th in the Sportsplex at 7pm the Trumpet band of the Dutch Army will be performing as a tribute to the Canadian Forces that liberated Holland 50 years ago. It's their expression of thanks for the Canadian soldiers who freed their country. They have a unique performance, they are the only band that performs on bicycles. It is the top band in the Dutch Army and they are making a limited tour of Western Canada. Magrath’s "Spirit of Alberta" band will be taking part in the program. Part of the money raised from ticket sales will be donated to our band. We would like to urge all people to come and support this program at 7pm in the Sportsplex on Wednesday, October 26th. Tickets are $5 per seat with a maximum of $20/family. Tickets may be obtained from Mr. Chatwin at the school or at the Sportsplex box office. ******* SCHOOL NEWS: Magrath Wolverines completed their regular season, moving to 5-2 with a 45-8 victory over the Lions. Michael Heggie scored three touchdowns for the winners, while Travis Peirens had a pair. Greg Bourne scored on 16 yard reverse, and Andy Beres added score from 22 yards out. Boys varsity volleyball were beaten by the W.C. Bulldogs last Wednesday night. Jr. varsity ended with 2 to 1 for Magrath. Girls varsity volleyball travelled to Picture Butte to play in their tourney. The came out in fifth place. Saturday night the Tom Karren Gym hosted the U of L Pronghorns exhibition game against Regina. Regina walked off with a win, scoring 94-82.
