He related his Missionary experiences at services in the Magrath 1st Ward Church Sunday evening. St. Joseph's C.W.L. met at the home of Lydia Tricsli beginning with Mass for the February meeting. The February Card Party will be at Louise Bengrys on Feb. 26th at 7:30 P.M. Lydia Tricsli is in charge of a donut drive which will be held in the near future, the date will be announced shortly. Two meetings will be held in March - March 1st at Irene Kusz and March 29th at Lydia Brunnger which will be the elections of all the executive. HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL NEWS The final Home League High School Basketball Games will be this Saturday, Feb. 19th against the L.C.I. Colts and Rams. Game times are 6:30 & 8 P.M. The teams and ’cheerleaders have been given excellent support from the community arid to show some apprec­iation the school will give away, at half time of the Zenith game, a number of door prizes. The prizes will include booster buttons, horns, -school T Shirts ' and other items. During the weekend Magrath Eagle6 and the C.C. Flyers tangled with Eagles winning 74-41. That same evening Zeniths and C.C. Cougars met with Cougars going down to defeat 81-46. The night previous Cardston Wildcats outshot Magrath Eagles 53-51 while Zeniths defeated . CAPITAL REPORT The sprfhg sesson óf the Alberta Legislature will open February 24th and will last for about three months and is the major session of the year. The most important piece of business to be dealt with is the approval of the budget for the coming year. Last year the budget amounted to nearly 3 billion dollars and I expect that this year it will be 3.3 billion. Education, Medical Care and Social Services required half of the budget last year and I assume that the same will hold true again this year. In fact your government will spend nearly $1.000 for every man, woman and child in this province in these three departments. The following are some of the issues I believe will be debated in the spring session. One is the restriction of foreign ownership of land. Another is the changes in the Planning Act, another will be the government’s position regarding the federal Anti Inflation program. To some the re­distribution of seats will be of interest. Another area will be the increase in tuition fees for toreign students and I am sure international trade and patriation of the constitution will also be discussed. My concern lies not only with the above issues but also includes the following. It seems we are spending more and more on education but the students are getting less and less basic education. I dont blame the class room teacher for this, but some how basic education must be upgraded. Alberta has the highest divorce rate per capita of any province in Canada and the single parent family is increasing rapidly. Three years ago the government spent 43 million doll­ars in this area and this year we are spending nearly 70 million of single parent families. I am not concerned about the money as I am bout the breakdown of the family unit and what it will do to our society in the future because a close family unit is the basis of a strong society. •• A bill to increase the legal age for the consumption of alcohol was introduced in the legislat­ure last fall but was not passed. I supported this bill and I feel that in rural Alberta at least the desire for legislation of this type is gaining support. . I will be in Edmonton for the next 3 months with the exception of the weekends. Survivors include Mrs. Fri -is of Mrs. Alice Gruninger who at the age of Gruninger, Mrs. Iola Clark of Edmonton, Mrs. Rachel Clark of Fort Vermilion, Leah Alcanter of Sacramento, Calif., Marion McCameley of Cal­gary, Faye Gruninger of Whiskey Gap, and sons Lawrence of Cutbank, Raymond of Whiskey Gap and Richard of Cutbank, Mont.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Requiem Mass was cele­brated in the Catholic Church of the Immaculate Heart in Cardston on Monday, Fe. 14th with Father P. Poulin as celebrant. Interment followed in the Cardston Cemetery. TOWN OF MAGRATH NOTICE - STRAY ANIMALS: The owner or person in actual possession of live­stock or domestic fowl or any person authorized by either of them may ill a dog in the act of pursuing, worrying or destroying that live­stock or domestic fowl on land owned or occ­upied by the owner or person in actual poss­ession of that livestock or domestic fowl. Where a person belives that any other per­son owns or has in his possession a dog that within one month of the date of his appliea-tion under this section has worried, injur eu or destroyed livestock or domestic fowl out­side land owned or occupied by the owner or person in possession of the dog, he may apply to a provincial judge for an order that the dog be killed. Where the provincial judge finds that a dog has within one month of the date of the application under section (1), worried, in­jured or destroyed livestock or domestic fowl outside the land occupied by the owner or person in possession of the dog, the provincial judge may (a) order the dog killed or (b) make such other order as to him appears appropriate in the circumstances. STEED The Meat Cutting and Electrical Course ************************************************* held the past two weeks were quite su’ccess-r ful. Some 32 peple were enrolled, 10 in Meat Cutting, 22 in Farm & Home Electrical Course. Those in the Meat Cutting Course gained valuable knowledge regarding the cutting up and wrapping of beef, lamb, pork and fish. Mr. Al Potman, S.A.I.T., Calgary, was an enthusiastic and interesting instructor,. The Electrical Course gave those enrolled a chance to plan various wiring systems, regulations to be met, wire hook-ups for farm home, yard buildings, etc. Instructor was Ed Candler from Edmonton, a retired inspector for electrical installations in the city of Edmonton. All felt it was a good practical course with much useful information being gained. <• It is hoped there will be a good turn.out for the Welding Course starting February 21/77.
