A 3-in-l event; Mother’s Day, twins Ty and Camryn’s baptism along with their 8th month birthdays. Camryn was the first to be baptized, she didn’t have any objections whatsoever being admitted to he church. The common method nowadays is pouring, or, splashing water on the forehead three times. It’s a family custom from generation to generation to baptize the infants in a christening gown which is treasured and a keepsake, unfortunately, the Bertschy gown wouldn’t fit. Ty and Camryn, were outfitted in a Baptismal outfit consisting of vest and dress, which Sharron, Leanne’s mother, purchased especially for the purpose, Leanne and Steve will no doubt use a few more times, (Just kidding Leanne). It was Ty’s turn next, it’s amazing how good natured the twins were at a time like this, neither Ty or Camryn kicked up a stink.Danin also took part in the family ceremonies, he was very pleased when asked to helped pour water in the christening water container. hut, it’s a completely different story when he is behind the camera. I will have to say, it was an eventful moment for Leanne and Steve. Also, they have children they are very rrpmirl nf Here ."OT the grandparents and ministers after the baptism. Who is the shy boy in the top left hand corner?? After the baptism, it is a tradition for the family to celebrate, well, I’m not family, but I was very pleased to be invited. For the celebration, we went to the Beef and Brew in High River for an excellent meal and social. "S* 7W/' Aeawie This took place in the United Church in High River. While I sat in the reception • area of my doctor’s office, a woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair into the room. As she went to the receptionist’s desk, the man sat there, alone and silent. Just as I was thinking I should make small talk with him, a little boy slipped off his mother’s lap and walked over to the wheelchair. Placing his hand on the man’s he said, “I know how you feel. My mom makes me ride in the stroller too.” On the way back from a Cub Scout meeting, my grandson asked my son the question. “Dad, I know that babies come from mommies’ tummies, but how do they get there in the first place?” he asked innocently. After my so hemmed and hawed awhile, my grandson finally spoke up in disgust. “You don’t have to make something up, Dad. It’s OK if you don’t know the answer.” Just before I was deployed to Iraq, I sat my eight-year-old son down and broke the news to him. “I’m going to be away for along time,” I told him. “I’m going to Irag. “Why?” he asked, “Don’t you know there’s a war going on over there?” *»4k As I was nursing my baby, my cousin’s six-year-old daughter came into the room. Never having seen anyone breast feed before, she was intrigued and full of all kinds of questions about what I was doing. After mulling over my answers, she remarked, “My mom has some of those, but I don’t think she knows how to use them!” Out bicycling one day with my 1 ® I eight-year-old granddaughter, I got a little wistful. “In ten years,” I said, “You’ll want to be with your friends and you won’t go walking, biking, and swimming with me like you do now.” Carolyn shrugged. “In ten years you’ll be too old to do all those things anyway!” i LCIO J UbrarV WEB LINKS Our Roots (http:/ / www.ourroots.ca) Have you ever wondered where you could find information about the history of your small town, rural area or large city.? I just plopped down $149 for an Indigo Kobo (the fashionable black “stealth” model, even though it will take 2 weeks longer to come off backorder). Wish me luck. I’ve wanted one for a while, and as part of my campaign to stay tech- sawy (my computer skills pay the rent) I thought now was the time. As your humble correspondent, I promise to keep you updated on the experience, from impatiently waiting to the actual look and functionality. I will not blow any smoke up your pant cuffs -you will get the unvarnished details from start to finish. As a life-long avid reader, I can’t wait to embrace the new technology. Remember, I like to say that I’m older than 8-tracks, but younger than sliced bread - music for me started as 45s and LPs, moved through 8-track and compact cassettes to CDs, and I now have an l-Tunes account (after much hounding from the daughter). While I wait, the natural question becomes “What will I put on it?” The magic of the E-Reader is you can load your “faves” if you are the type to like re-reading books you enjoyed greatly - and I am that type. So without doing any homework on whether I can get these volumes /aut hors from my past, I thought I’d give you a few selections that I hope to load when I can. The trip will extend back quite a few years, but everything mentioned has my personal recommendation, and I’ll try to give you the 5 cent review so you can get a better idea of the genre and “feel”. Here we go. Alistair MacLean Once upon a time I liked a man’s stories so much that I started to buy them in hardcover as soon as they came out, and that bad habit stayed with me for decades. As a young man, what could be more exciting than an amazing war story, following by secret agent stuff that is still being copied today. What got me hooked was his first novel - H.M.S Ulysses - a naval story set win WW2. I was “locked in”, fully immersed, hooked, call it what you want. This novel remains an absolute classic of what it was like to serve on a ship in combat. MacLean followed with a string of secret agent / spy stuff, many of which were made into Hollywood films. Ever heard of Where Eagles Dare (Clint Eastwood & Richard Burton), The Guns ofNavarone (David Niven), Ice Station Zebra (Rock Hudson during his macho years), Force Ten from Navarone (some young guy named Harrison Ford) and The Satan Bug (way better than the Andromeda Strain, but we’ll get to Crichton.)? Any of these are a fine read for the action hero fan. The B-Class movies include Puppet On a Chain,Fe ar Is The Key and The Golden Gate (stinker made for TV). Tread carefully though, and stick to his first few. He ran out of plots after a few years, and his later characters spent most of their time drinking or thinking about drinking, so don't waste your time on any stuff after the mid 70’s. Tom Clancy OK, so now I get more mainstream. I picked up The Hunt For Red October the day it came out in paperback - as a big spender my bookstore manager never hesitated to push stuff under my nose - and I proceeded to be 10 minutes late coming back from lunch. I’m lucky enough to have individually numbered and signed special sleeved hardcover editions of several of his works, both fiction and nonfiction - there’s that bad habit. (Did I mention that when I get into a book I really like,I r ation pages to make the book last longer? The first day I only let myself read 100 pages. Then on day 2,1 sta rt back at page 50, and read to 200. Day 3 begins at 150, and goes to 300. The 50 page review puts me back where I was, and often I pick up nuances I’ve missed gobbling up text and story line.) Back to Clancy - Techno-thriller was the new genre, and I was hooked. Unless you’re hard core, skip Red Storm Rising, and go for Patriot Games, The Cardinal Of The Kremlin, Clear And Present Danger, and The Sum Of All Fears.) The rest are take it or leave it for me, and just plain forget all that stuff written by other people using his name to sell the book. (Rainbow Six was fun, but only for the gratuitous violence.) Larry Bond came along in Clancy’s wake (author of the sub tactical video game on which Red October was based) and he can be a fun read too, Michael Crichton Yes, these are still pretty mainstream, but that doesn’t mean they are boring books. Again, I’ll list a few of my favourites, and remind you that they can’t ail be great. I loved The Andromeda Strain, The 13th Warrior, Jurassic Park,Ris ing Sun, Congo and Timeline - and it’s tough to pick which I liked best. Given the period of time over which he has taken a technology and explored what happens when it runs amok, he must stand as one of the great popular writers of our time. Steven Coonts OK, back to that techie military stuff - here just read Flight Of The Intruder by a guy who could really put you in the cockpit over North Viet Nam. His character goes on forever through his next several books - which are only for the real Coonts fan. Preston & Child Again, I was lucky to pick up a first novel that went on to become a series incorporating those characters in a variety of ways and combinations. Relic is just a great classic thriller, and stands up very well to the test of time and the re-read. Both guys have gone on to write solo, but their best work was together. More after the E-Reader arrives. Over the years they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, 'Now don't get mad at me.I know we've been friends for a long time.but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is.' Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, 'How soon do you need to know?' An elderly couple were on a cruise and it was really stormy. They were standing on the back of the boat watching the storm, when a wave came up and washed the old man overboard. The boat crew searched for days and couldn't find him, so the captain sent the old woman back to shore with the promise that he would notify her as soon as they found something. Three weeks went by and finally the old woman got a fax from the boat. It read: 'Ma'am, sorry to inform you, we found your husband dead at the bottom of the ocean. We hauled him up to the deck and attached to his butt was an oyster and in it was a pearl worth $50,000. Please advise.' The old woman faxed back: 'Send me the pearl and re-bait the trap.' JOKE OF THE YEAR Two women were sitting together, quietly. HOW TO CLEAN THE HOUSE 1. Open a new file in your PC. 2. Name it 'Housework.' 3. Send it to the RECYCLE BIN. 4. Empty the RECYCLE BIN. 5. Your PC will ask you, 1 Are you sure you want to delete Housework permanently?' 6. Calmly answer, 'Yes' and press mouse button firmly. 7. Feel better? Works for me! Best Idea I have heard in a long time. Here’s a solution to all the controversy over full-body scanners at airports. Have a booth that you can step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on you. It would be a win-win for everyone. God’s Problem Now. His wife’s grave side service was just barely finished, when there was a massive clap of thunder, followed by a tremendous bolt of lightning, accompanied by even more thunder rumbling in the distance. The little old man looked at the pastor and calmly said, “Well, she’s there.”City driving “Burt’s Point of View” Living in the small town of Milo, with a population of about 122 people (that is probably including their pets), whenever I mention I’m going to Calgary, right away people give me “their point of view ” about city drivers and how they detest driving in congested traffic. I think that is because they don’t know the unwritten rules for city driving. I’m not saying you’re not safe and cautious drivers, it’s just that different rules and regulations apply. Whereas I have lived, and drove, for many years in different cities, I’ll give you a general idea of their “Rules For Driving In The Big Cities”. To begin, why use your turn signals, it will give away your next move, as you have noticed, a real city-slicker driver seldom uses them. Why let others know what your intentions are, it’s your business not theirs. It’s the same with following another vehicle, under no circumstances should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, or the space will be filled in by somebody else placing you in an even more dangerous situation. Cell phones and other hand held communication devices are allowed providing you have on your roof in plain sight a big flashing red warning light which automatically comes on when the hand held device is activated. This will give other drivers and pedestrians warning that you have more important business than paying attention to your driving. Another thing, you may have noticed when driving anywhere in the city, crossing two or more lanes in a single lane-change is considered going with the flow. It’s the same with driving on the Deerfoot Trail, (main highway stretching across Calgary), changing lanes frequently helps to keep you and the other drivers alert. As you have noticed, speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as suggestions and are apparently not the speed at which you should travel, always, always exceed it to keep up with, again, the flow of traffic. Now here is one which probably raised your blood pressure you noticed but never realized, a right lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can cut in line by passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for the same jerks to squeeze their way back in before hitting the orange construction barricades. When it comes to passing, never pass on the left when you can pass on the right, it's a good way to scare people entering from a merge lane.Defensive driving is a must, the faster you drive through a red light, the smaller the chance you have of getting hit. It’s the same rule for stop signs, never, ever come to a complete stop. No one expects it and it will inevitably result in you being rear- ended. If you want your insurance company to pay for a new rear bumper, come to a complete stop at all stop signs. A rear end collision is automatically the fault of the following driver and the other guy doesn't have anything to lose; obviously he wants some bodywork done to his car and sue for his wife having whiplash even if she wasn’t in the car at the time of the accident. Speaking of which, never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork the same tactic applies. It is a must to be alert while driving, to have a nice relaxing foot massage as the brake pedal pulsates, brake as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in. For those of you without ABS, it's a chance to stretch your legs while quickly braking when following too close or somebody else is on your bumper. So there you have it, don’t master these techniques before heading for the big city, driving will still be a challenging game, life threatening and very stressful. Remember, drivers license is a privilege, the rules and regulations are there for a purpose. Accidents can still happen due to driver error, lack of attention reasons or another drivers stupidity. The largest majority of people don’t drive with the intention of having an accident; their major goal is to get somewhere, and without consideration of others. We all pick up good or bad driving habits. “So There!!” “And That was my Point of View”. Mart Remember, give your blood to the Red Cross, not the highways or city streets._____________Familiar Troubles . Which do you want to overcome? Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder Thank goodness there's a name for this disorder. Somehow I feel better even though I have it!! This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Pepsi I’d been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first i need to push the Peps! aside so that i don't accidentally knock it over. The Pepsi is getting warm, and t decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As i head toward the kitchen with the Pepsi, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye-they need water. I put the Pepsi on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for ai! morning. I decide i better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: the ear isn't washed the bills aren’t said there is a warm can of Pepsi sitting on the counter the flowers don't have enough water, there is still only 1 check in mv cheek book, i can't find the remote. I can't find mv classes, and I don't remember what i did with the car ke¥§.-. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because i know I was busy all damn day, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e- mail. Local Story? We are always looking for new stories about local events, persons or history. We are so grateful for all the prayers & hugs & all the phone calls & all the visits & all the food brought to the house in Lethbridge. We kept a record for Jen so she would see just how much everyone was thinking of her. A BIG PART of Jen's recovery was the recorder Shelley Berg gave Brad so he could play the messages to her. I'm sure her ears were sore from him always holding the recorder up to her ear.!!
