DISTRICT AGRICULTURISTS REPORT Fertilizing Your Lawn: At the start of the growing season, established lawns will benefit from an application of fertilizer containing nitrogen. A fertilizer that contains two parts nitrogen to one part phosphate such as 27-14-0 is ideal. Apply at a rate that provides 2 lbs. N to 1000 sq. ft. of lawn. A second application will be required during the first two week6 of July. Applications made late in the growing season, after August 14, but before the grass goes dormant are not recommended. When using inorganis fertilizers, apply them when the humidity is low and turf is dry to avoid "burning". Inorganic fertliz- ers will become available to the grass more quickly when watered-in immediately after application. Fertilizer should be spread evenly in two directions at right angles to each other as you would for seed. The dental department of Chief Mountain Health Unit is undertaking many projects in the communities and school system to help make more people aware of their dental health. Several articles will be forthcoming in the following weeks. . WHAT IS DENTAL PLAQUE? The identification and understanding of plaque ranks as one of the most important dental discoveries ever made. Plaque is a sticky, colourless, nearly transparent bacterial film which continuously forms on your teeth. Bacteria thrive in the sticky film that builds up constantly on teeth and gums. Dentists place strong emphasis on controlling plaque. Dental researchers are busily exploring ways of preventing plaque buildup in the hope of stopping cavities and and gum diseases. Most people realize that their mouths contain millions, even billions of bacteria. There'are many kinds of bacteria but scientists have recently identified the streptococci family as probably playing a major role in tooth decay. The proper control of the plaque in which these harmful bacteria thrive is not accidental it must be learned. It requires the teamwork of you and your dentist to keep you mouth free from disease. To help prevent dental decay and gum disease, bacterial plaque should be removed from all tooth surfaces a minimum of once a day Use of dental floss and a toothbrush are necessary. Children and decay-prone adults should regularly use a fluoride toothplaste in addition to drinking fluroidated water. The intake of sweets, particularly sweet snacks, should be limited.
