Thanh you! SNemLLe & Orene Councilor’s Comments These are my opinions and do not necessarily reflect Vulcan County Policy The County crews will start work soon. Nick has put several gravel trucks on the road already. This cold weather may stop work for a few days but most of the equipment is ready to go. Not a lot of time was spent snowplowing the secondary highways so we may have made a few dollars there. The road grader worked off and on most of the winter and most roads are in pretty good shape. None of the new equipment the County ordered has arrived yet. It seems a lot of heavy equipment id made as ordered. Your County Council has some concerns about the 911 system. It seems the directions to the emergency are not always coming across accurately. Emergency equipment must be able to respond quickly and precise directions are a must. We are hoping the situation can be corrected. For several years now your Council has been studying what to do with the administrator______ building. It no longer meets the new codes for accessibility. As well the heating and air conditioning system are totally impossible to live with. The building has many problems that need to be addressed. We need to, in the next year or so, decide to remodel, rebuild or repair. Either way is expensive. I believe there is a new release about this in the Advocate. Grant Lahd The Milo United Church sincerely thank each and everyone for your willingness to help us in anyway to make our Ham Supper a success year after year. Making the many pies that are needed, cooking and cutting up the hams, supplying ovens to bake the potatoes. Helping with the job of doing dishes and cleaning up after, etc. We greatly appreciate your support by coming out to the supper In return you are helping us keep our Church doors open (with a Minister) for Weddings, Funerals, Baptisms, Tiny Tots, etc. etc. Helping one another is what keeps a community going. An added bonus, you didn’t have to think of what to make for supper that night!! There are a lot of deep, dark secrets in the world of magic, but the talents of Lloydminster magician Brent Smith is not one of them. Since moving to the border city from Calgary two and a half years ago, Smith has been gaining in popularity' and his shows can be seen at parties and special events. An age-old mystery, magic has changed with the times and Smith represents the new age generation of magicians. Just 32 years of age he has been practicing his art of illusion for more than 20 years. Like most males, his father was his inspiration and influence. Because of an active imagination Smith had trouble falling asleep as a child, so his father introduced him to the world of deception. Brent would crawl into bed with his dad and watch him make coins disappear and do other tricks,it was all really cool he recalls. Later he saw the major magicians on T V. like David Copperfield and Doug Hemming. He watched them levitate ladies and cut them in half and he thought that pretty neat. So he started saving his allowance until he had saved enough to buy himself a trick. With his money firmly in his hand he looked in the Calgary' Phone book to locate a magic shop. His first trick was called the penetrating frame and he would spend endless hours repeating the steps to the trick before springing it on his parents and friends and gave his first show when he was about 13 or 14. He acquired a taste for entertainment at a very early age and it is a taste he is still trying to satisfy. Magic, he says isn’t impressive without an awe-struck audience. With the money he made in his early shows he re-invested into building bigger and better tricks. Today, Smith’s now Grand Illusions and his 20 years of hard work and experience is evident in every show, which has grown from a few simple card and coin tricks to a point where he purchased more elaborate tricks, such as a box used to saw his assistant in half. His act is flowing, humorous and amazing, but like all entertainers Smith has gone through some hardships. Although he says he nev.gr went through Lhe.‘starving artist syndrome- he maintains his magic is still his hobby, which he is constantly practicing and performing when not doing his regular job. He feels that magic is sort of an art form, the same as dancing, singing or the theatre. It is entertainment and the feedback from the audience is really satisfying. (excerpt from an article written by Dan Feser in the Lloydminster Times) On Saturday April 7th at the Milo Lions Club Charter Night, we look forward to seeing Brent Smith performing some of his special magic!! Recently at one of our Can Opener work sessions, a question was raised about “Soup Can Labels”, why are they collected? what is done with then? and how is it all done? With fantastic super sleuthing on the writers’ part, we were able to come up with some answers to these questions, and decided that if we informed our readers, they might also like to contribute to this cause. The labels in question are Campbell’s soup labels. There is a large receptacle at Jamie’s Food Store, and they can also be left at the school. Campbell’s has a program whereby if labels are sent to their company, points are then allotted to the local school. A catalogue is sent to the school listing various items that can be " obtained with the points collected. First the labels must show the Campbell’s name the type of soup and the bar code. This is best obtained if the labels are split down the back. Some members of the community will pick them up, trim them and put them into packs of 100. They are then sent to Campbell’s. For the regular size cans the school receives 1 point, for Chunky 2 points, and for the large cans 4 points. When enough points are collected something will be chosen for the use of pupils at the school. They are hoping to have enough points by Easter to order something from the catalogue. As per usual residents of Milo and district have been very supportive of this project, and our grateful thanks goes to all who help. There is also a past resident of this area, Loree Groves of Rocky Mountain House, who has been saving the labels and has sent down over 3000 labels for this project, a special thank you goes to Loree, from the school If you have not saved your labels in the past, perhaps you will now consider doing so, and putting them in the container at the store. "Box 67, Milo, Alberta TOL HO Open - Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday For All those Born Before 1950 We are the survivors!!! Consider the changes we have seen. We were bom before television, before penicillin, before polio shots, frozen foods, xerox, plastic, contact lenses, frisbees and the pill. We were before radar, credit cards, atoms, laser beams, ballpoint pens, pantyhose, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric, blankets, air conditioners, drip-dry clothes, and before man walked on the moon. We got married first and then lived together. In our time closets were for clothes, not for "coming out of", bunnies were small rabbits, and rabbits were not Volkswagons. Designer Jeans were scheming girls named Jean or Jeanne, and having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with our cousins. We were before house-husbands, gay rights, computer dating, dual careers and computer marriages. Before day care centres, roup therapy and nursing homes. We never eard of FM radio, tape decks, electric typewriters, artificial hearts, word processors, yogurt and guys wearing earrings. For us, time-sharing meant togetherness not condominiums, a chip was a piece of wood, hardware meant hardware, and software wasn't a word! In 1940 "made in Japan" meant junk and the term "making out" referred to how you did on your exam. Pizza, McDonald's and instant coffee were unheard of. We arrived when there were 5 and 10 cent stores, where you bought things for 5 and 10 cents. We bought ice cream cones for a nickel (chocolate covered 10 cents). For one nickel you could ride a street car, make a phone call, buy a Pepsi, or enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards. You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600.00 but who could afford one; a pity as gas was 11 cents a gallon. In our day smoking was fashionable, grass was mowed, coke was a cold drink and pot was something you cooked in and Aids were helpers in the Principal's office. We were certainly not before the difference between the sexes was discovered, but we were surely before the sex change; we made do with what we had. And we were the last generation that was so dumb as to think you needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder we are so confused and there is such a generation gap today. But we survived!! Next morning we boarded our ship the beautiful Italian “Costa Victoria”, our home for the next seven days. A private cocktail party was held that evening, compliments of the Cruise line. Stops during the cruise were Key West, Cozumel, Jamaica and Grand Caymen. Lots of shopping, sightseeing, tours and fun, fun, fun. Night-time found us gathered at our favorite bar on board and then on to dinner; a guaranteed 71b. weight gain per week. The food was excellent and desserts out of this world. Entertainment was first class with a definite Italian flavor, some suited “Togas” better than others!!! Ending our cruise we were transported to Orlando and spent three days going through Kennedy Space Centre and Epcot. We had a farewell party at our hotel, compliments of Valuventure Travel. As our trip came to an end we said good-bye to a few of our fellow travelers and the rest of us left for Calgary. We came home having met so many wonderful people and experiencing different cultures. A visit to Brown Owls' farm allowed the girls to discover several different animal tracks in the snow and make sure the birds had lots to eat. The joint birthdays of the founder of Girl Guides and his wife was celebrated and the girls realized that they are part of a very large, worldwide organization. Instead of putting the dough to rise in one large amount, after the mixing and kneading process, cut the dough into 3-4 pieces, roll each piece into a ball and then leave to rise. Easter is a Christian festival that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is one of the movable feasts of the Christian church. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21 - it cannot come before March 22 or after April 25. Some of the Easter symbols are: the Cross - represents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and of Christ’s victory over death, the Lamb is often included in Easter decorations as a symbol of Jesus. Lights, candles and bon fires mark Easter celebrations in some countries Eggs represent the new life that returns to nature around Easter time. Early Christians in Mesopotamia were the first to use colored eggs for Easter. The last week of Lent, called Holy Week, begins on Palm Sunday. It is named for the palm branches. that_people. spread before Jesus-as he - - rode into Jerusalem. The Thursday of Holy Week is call Maundy Thursday - the time that Christians recall Jesus’ Last Supper and the time he washed His disciples’ feet. Good Friday is the day of Christ’s crucifixion. Easter Sunday Christians in all parts of the world unite their feelings of joy in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is celebrated in different ways in other countries. In Canada, many people attend outdoor sunrise services and church services on Easter morning.
