MILO SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PRODUCTION Once again the students are to be congratulated for a job well done. The staff enjoyed working with the students in presenting “The Christmas Conspiracy”. Our thanks go to the Mothers who sewed and organized costumes for the performances, and a big thank-you to all who came to the performances and supported the students on a very cold day. Thank-you also for your generous donations to the food bank. Our best wishes to all for a restful holiday and a Happy New Year. The Milo Community School Staff. P.S. The Students Union wishes to thank all those who supported our sale of Christmas trees. Thank-you to Mrs. Reynolds who looks after this for us. We feel it is not a necessity at this time. If in the future it becomes apparent the need of the Courtesy Car is there we will again make it available, xr; Thank you to all our volunteer drivers. Milo Rural InitiativesIN MEMORIUM PRENTICE, James (Jim) Fredrick Prentice passed away December 21, 200, in the High River Hospital. _ Jim was born September 27,1920 at Bassano, Alberta to George and Freda (Roseen) Prentice. He was raised and lived all of his life in the Majorville area; he attended school at Liberty and Milo. Home to Jim was always the house on the home quarter. At the age of 19 his father passed away and Jim took over the responsibilities of running the family farm. Jim enjoyed sports of all kinds, and took an active part in curling, baseball and his special interest; Chuck wagon racing, many of his favourite memories, friends and stories stem from his involvement as a judge and avicL supporter of wagon racing. Jim married Brenda Holladay in 1961; they raised a family of four children. In the past several years he has been farming with his son Ken. He liked to spend his time dreaming up and completing innovative useful projects, relaxing with a book or crossword puzzle and a bottle of “Pil”. He loved quiet times with his grandchildren, building “Duplo” towers. Sleepy cuddles, the help they gave with the crossword puzzles, and their wonderful hand made gifts. Jim is survived and missed By his wife of 39 14 years, Brenda; four children: a daughter Cynthia Prentice of Jasper; three sons; Ken (Ann) of Milo, Jim (Alanna) of Vulcan and Rick of Calgary. Four grandchildren; Wren, Thomas, Sara and Cody; two sisters Phyllis Hunter of Vulcan, Helen Thompson of Milo; five nieces, Ellen, Janice, Wendy, Kathy and Melissa and one nephew Ron. He was predeceased by his parents George and Freda (Roseen), one brother Alan (Bob), two brothers-in-law, Jack Flunter and Haldor Thompson and a niece Carol Ann Silverman. At Jim’s request no funeral service will be held. A private family gathering will take place on December 30th, 2000. Jim was cremated and honouring his wishes, in the spring his ashes will be scattered on the Home Quarter into a South - East wind (he always said a S.E. wind would bring rain). In lieu of flowers, tributes in Jim’s memory could be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 1331 - 29 Street S.W., Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2 or the Vulcan and District Ambulance Service, Box 299, Vulcan, AB. The Provincial Govt, would like to finish Highway 24 north to the Carseland biidge. Apparently there is one owner who refuses to sign a right ot way/sale ol land, agreement The Govt, has lots of work so aren’t in any hurry to go on this one. Secondary 531 will receive a shoulder build up where needed and an oveilay next summer Also the Provincial Govt, will have a look at the Lomond Causeway, finally getting motivated on this. The Bow City Bridge is now on their 3 year plan although it’s a long way from the top of the list. Their first move will be on environmental study. Can t interfere with the lives of a fish you know. This has been an expensive problem for bridge building The next phase of 542 east appears to be on the top of the l ist. There is a land man presently buying the right of way now. Last year when our engineers wanted to make the west end a little wider, it was "NO WAY”. Costs too much. Now the engineers [same ones] are told cut down the hills, get good sidiyslope. lot s of wide top and back slope, new fences , wide approaches etc. Cost is not a problem or so it seems. Anyway if all goes well there will be a spring start on this portion ol 542, going east about 6 miles. Your Vulcan County has passed the new budget and there is no tax increase for farm land in it. We will be purchasing some big iron this spring. The 627 scraper that we rented has been bought and we recei ved credit for most of the rent money so it is about $200,000 cheaper than brand new. Also 2 highway tractors will be purchased, replacing 2 of the older ones. These are for the gravel trailers. Also another tractor and mower and some other small stuff will be added to our fleet of equipment. About 13 miles of road construction was completed this last summer. The 2 -627 scrapers have a push pull hook up and these 2 machines can do about 3 times as much work as 1. I believe this has been our most productive year since I’ve been there. Also these machines can work by themselves and do some small jobs fairly quickly. If you have Low blood pressure get a gun registration form and youi problem wi be solved quicker than any doctor can fix it for you. Tn all the years I have filled out Govt forms this one has got to be the most offensive. On every Govt, form there is a place to sign your name indicating the above information is true. This one is different You have to supply a photo Icost me00] also someone who has known you for at least a year, has to print their name and pu ttheir signature on the photo! Then they have to sign the form saying they know you. On the form they want, to know if you have been divorced, how many people you have lived with male or female, their names and addresses etc. They also want, in the case ot country people, the land location where you actually live. Tm surprised they don t want your fingerprints and a dental imprint or maybe your shoe size. Holland had gun registration before World War 1 I When the Nazis invaded they were able to disarm the Dutch in a matter of days What is our Govt, up to? 1 he free state of Alberta is getting closer 1 think. . . There is a different form for Indians. 1 would like to get one and see what they have to do. After Dec. 31* 1 don’t think you can get a possession only licence but would have to applv for the more restricted acquisition licence, which costs a lot more naturally. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a separate form for known criminals, as they may not always tell the truth about themselves. May God help us all Grant Lahd NOTICE MR. This year’s caper, written by grade 7,8 and 9 students, saw Hasbro Top Executives trying to buy out Santa’s business for 6 billion dollars. When Santa refused, the Hasbro mad scientists trapped him and cloned him. When one of the scientists used a “no name” Coke in “The Mix” Santa’s twin appeared, - the Evil Santos (dressed in black). Santos’ aim was to make bad, bad toys and take away the Christmas Spirit, and then he kidnapped Santa and hid him away. Mrs. Claus and the Head Elf were frantic to find Santa, especially when Santos and his evil elves kicked everyone out of the workshop and they had to live in a cold cave. Mrs. Claus and the elf traveled far and wide, even to Hollywood looking for Santa. Along the way, help came in the form of fine penguins, willing to search for Santa (Tim Allan, Arnold Schwartznager and Tom Cruise). Meanwhile,_Santos was terrifying everyone from the elves and reindeer, to shoppers, to Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men. Finally a flock of Bluebirds flew into Survivor Island, where Mrs. Claus was still searching for Santa. They carried a scroll and a crystal ball sent by Santa - which told them he was hidden at the South Pole. A rescue mission was planned and executed and Santa was free at last. What about Santos? He promised to behave himself, after agreeing to the offer of a high paying Salesman’s job. The performance concluded with two Christmas Carols, led by Mrs. Cockwill. After seeing this fine and enjoyable performance it makes one realize the hard work put into the production, and many thanks should be given to the student who wrote the script (I can see a lot of future Canadian writers here), the performers, the teachers, all the staff, and to everyone for all their help with the costumes and the play. Our name for the most popular of winter sports comes from ski, a Norwegian word that originally meant a splinter of wood. Such splinters were used as snowshoes and in shapes that resembled our modern skis. The earliest known ski was recovered from a Swedish peatbog and dates back to about 4500 BC. --- The December meeting was held at Lois Dietz’s home. There were 8 members and Pastor Ed present. A donation was sent to F.C.S.S. at Vulcan for the food bank. An artificial Christmas tree with lights has been purchased for the church. Our Christmas party for the ladies of the community proved to be a success as there were 81 in attendance. On Sunday, Dec 10th, Lois hosted a dinner at her home for the Lutheran Ladies - 17 in number, it was catered by Prairie Perfection and greatly enjoyed by all present. Letters were read from Canadian Lutheran World Relief acknowledging receipt of Layettes and kits and a donation to cover ocean freight. A letter from our Alta. Synod E.L.W. president voiced concern over the low number of church members taking part in their local E.L.W. She noted that 21 congregational E.L.W. groups have disbanded in our Synod, because of the lack of interest. A questionnaire was included that was to be handed out to all women of the congregation. A motion was made to send 100% of our grace gift offerings to the Alta. Synod E.L.W. Donations were made to the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Saskatoon, and to Extendicare at Vulcan for Christmas Cheer for the patients there. Chris Bartsch and Lee Vooys arrived on a Friday evening and immediately along with their expert guides started making plans for the next day’s hunt. Saturday morning broke cold and clear, with a light snow cover. The sun was just breaking when the hunters arrived in the hunting area, after an hours drive. A large part of the day was taken up locating the moose, but in the late afternoon one of the guides located a herd. The moose were located in heavy burned over timber, so a plan was made to push them out to one of the hunters. The trap was set, one of the hunters was to sit in an open area while the other hunter and the guides would loop around and push them. Shortly after entering the bush two large trophy animals (50”plus) were located, one escaped the trap, while the other fell for it. The trophy moose ran through the thick burned over forest, and burst from the timber and into the sights of the awaiting hunter. . Now you find out “The Rest of the Story. . there was.also a deer!
