South Chief All-Stars win Prairies The South Chief All-Stars from Magrath and Raymond became the first AAA Little League team to win the Prairie Championships from this area. The team was coached by Gregg Hansen, Brent Maxwell and Jim Ralph. The All Stars were comprised of five Magrath and five Raymond 9 and 10 year olds. For that age group the Prairie Championship is the World Series. From Magrath were Russell Maxwell (2nd base), Tvlcr Hansen (pitcher/catcher), Carson Foggin (3rd base), Taylor Evans (outfield), and Corbin Stringam (3rd/outfield). From Raymond were Brooks Maxwell (short stop/pitcher), jimmy Ralph (pitcher/catcher), Bradee Perrett (1st base), Kendall Schultz (outfield), Jordan Oler (outfield). The South Chief All-Stars advanced to the Prairie Championships with a 9-1 victory over Norcrest of Lethbridge, in the District #1 Final behind 6 innings of pitching by Tyler Hansen and great team defense. In the Aug. 2-4th Prairies Championship, South Cliief was in one of four, 4-team pools with the winner of each pool advancing to the semi-finals. In the round robin, South Chief defeated Confederation Park of Edmonton 4-3. , „ ,, Centennial of Calgary 3-2, and Fort McMurray 11-5 with pitching wins from Jimmy, Tylci and Brooks respectively. Maxwell, Bradee Perrett. Kneeling: Taylor Evans, Jordan Oler, Russell Ill the semi-finals against the host Medicine Hat All-Stars, Maxwell, Corbin Stringam. In the final, Ttyler Hansen got the ball on the mound as South Chief faced a strong hitting team from Moose Jaw. Moose Jaw hit several balls hard in the final but strong defense from the two Maxwells at the middle infield positions robbed the Moose Jaw All-Stars of hits. Carson and Corbin also made great outs at 3rd base to allow the South Chief bats to come to life. In the 1st Jimmy reached on a single and Tyler hit a triple off the warning track to open the scoring. This seemed to ignite the defense and gave the kids a lot of confidence. In the 3rd inning with game tied at 1-1 and Brooks and Tyder on base, Russell drove in Brooks for the second run with a single, Bradee got to first to load the bases and then Jordan hit a single to score Tyler. With the bases still loaded, Corbin took one in the leg for the team to make the score 4-1. In the top of the 6th Moose Jaw fought back with a run to make it interesting at 4-2. With two outs and a runner on third, lyier struck out the final batter to start the celebrations. Every member of the team contributed in some way. Great defense and pitching were the keys to a perfect record in the tournament. More importantly, these 10 boys showed awesome team spirit and sportsmanship. They proved that when Magrath and Raymond aren’t battling against each other they can do marvelous things together. ♦ What is the All Star League? At the end of the House AAA Little League schedule, players from six southern Alberta teams can try out for the South Chief All Stars team. This team then plays in the All Star League, which runs through the month of July. The Prairie Championship includes teams from Alberta and Saskatchewan. This is occurring particularly in the Edmonton and St. Albert areas. This leaves some very shocked consumers when they find out the towing company called by the police may be charging some of these outrageous fees. Please take notice that some insurance companies will not pay these outrageous ‘fees’. Harry was as old as her father but Lila had no choice in the marriage. Harry told Lila that she would have to obey him or he wouldn’t take her to Canada. Lila told him that was perfectly fine with her, she didn’t want to go to Canada anyway (they kind of understood each other from then on). Harry Sam was 60 years old when he finally decided to marry and had gone to Hong Kong to find a wife. He hired a matchmaker who approached Lila’s sister. When the Lila’s sister heard the enormous amount that Harry was willing to pay she eagerly took the money and Lila became Mrs. Sam. Lila had come from a very wealthy family with a huge farm and many workers but when the Communists took over, their home was bombed and they lost everything. The newlyweds lived in Foremost and later in Lethbridge where Harry ran a greenhouse and a laundry. The greenhouse was on 20 acres of land right where the Regional Hospital now stands. Harry sold the land to a doctor for $50,000 and the astute(?) doctor immediately turned around and sold it to the hospital developers for $250,000. Harry and Lila then bought the confectionary from Harry’s cousin Charlie Sam and moved to Magrath. Lila said she was treated very well by the Canadian people but then she started to laugh and said, “Well, there were some boys here who would pound on the store door The Harry Sam family in 1967, with Terry in front and Lila, Sbamn, Harty and Lily. right about midnight every night.” They would wake up the baby and it would take Lila hours to get baby Sharon back to sleep. One night she had had enough. She took a baseball bat and stood behind the door. When the boys started pounding, Lila stuck her hand out the door, grabbed one of them and hauled him into the store. “I was mad,” she continued, “and he knew it! How would you like me to come to your house at midnight every night and pound on your door?” she scolded. “I’m not going to use this bat today but I will the next time I catch you.” The pounding miraculously stopped. As an adult Lila loved going back to school for Grade One and Two but not as much as the children in her class loved her being there. They would follow her everywhere because Lila always brought candy from the store for them. “Why is Mrs. Sam going to school with us?” they would ask Mrs. Sabey. “She wants to read and write just like you do,” the teacher replied. Lila laughed and said that she loves the Mormon people, “In fact, our confectionary was called the Third Ward Sunday School for awhile.” From the events and trials in Lila’s life she could have chosen to be an embittered miserable woman. But she is a gem; happy, fun-loving, generous and caring, an example to us all. “I just can’t stay away from the people in Magrath,” she admitted. “So when I get my mail, I also open my store for an hour or two. just so I can reminisce with my friends.” ♦ 'Wakeup 'With ^Make-up! Alberta's bird surveillance program for West Nile virus (WNv) has worked well, with 931 birds tested since the program began three months ago. The surveillance program tracks data from birds from different natural regions in the province (visit the Sustainable Resource Development web site at: As of July 31, 22 birds have tested positive for the virus, representing three of Alberta's six natural regions (Grassland, Parkland and Boreal Forest) and seven of the nine public health authority regions (excluding the two northernmost regions). It is apparent WNv in birds is occurring throughout the area south of Hwy 16 and east of Hwy 2 (see map accessible through the web site listed above). To date, there have been few birds submitted from the foothills and mountain areas of the province, or from the Peace River àrea. None have been received from the far northeast Canadian Shield. It may take some time for the virus to be detected among birds in these large, wild areas of Alberta. Bird surveillance will focus on these regions. Of the 22 birds tested, 14 crows, 7 magpies and one blue jay tested positive. Albertans have demonstrated great cooperation in submitting bird samples for the surveillance program. The province values their assistance in helping track the distribution of the virus. Although the risk of getting WNv is low, even in areas of North America where the virus has become established in mosquito and bird populations, Albertans should take suitable precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Detailed information on WNv and how to protect your family is available on the Alberta Health and Wellness web site at <http://www.health.gov.ab.ca>. The web site also includes guidelines on the safe use of mosquito repellents. If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions. • “How old are you?” “I’m four and a half!” You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half, going on five! That’s the key. You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. “How old are you?” “I’m gonna be 16!” You could be 13, but hey, you’re gomia be 16! And then the greatest day of your life. you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21 YESSSS!!! But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk. He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re just a sour-dumpling. What’s wrong? What’s changed? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 . and your dreams are gone. But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would! • So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60. You’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it’s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday! You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle: you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; “I was JUST 92.” Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. “I’m 100 and a half!” May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!! ♦ Pain is inevitable but misery is optional My Dad dug the grand-canyon. Magrath has a rich heritage of irrigation and so it is fitting that we have a state of the art system to water our lawns and gardens. In order to make the most efficient use of our grid of underground pipes, we are changing our water use policy: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: Residents with EVEN HOUSE NUMBERS will water on EVEN DAYS. Residents with ODD NUMBERED HOUSES will water on ODD DAYS. ■ Tliis change in watering policy will allow all residents to appreciate even better water pressure and flow to their, properties. The Town requests that all residents discontinue the use of potable water (that is, water that comes from a tap on your house) for watering lawns and gardens. The potable water is treated for drinking and household use. This treatment is expensive. We can reduce our overall Town taxes by not using potable/treated water outside. Remember, the raw water irrigation should not be drunk. It is not treated. However, the raw water is healthier for lawns than the potable water. Connections to the Raw Water Irrigation System: If you do not have a valve and spigot on your property that connects you to the Raw Water Irrigation System, please call the Town Office at 758-3212. We will look at how close our pipes are to your property and, if feasible, see that you are connected in a timely manner. Watch for Leaks We are pressurizing the irrigation system at about 40 pounds per square inch (p.s.i.). We may increase this in time. But for now, we expect to spend some time monitoring the system and fixing leaks in lines that are unaccustomed to this higher pressure. We ask that all residents be aware of the irrigation lines on or around their property and inform the Town of all leaks, accumulations of water, or Old Faithful-like geysers.
