MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 30 cents CELEBRATION SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT The Celebration softball tournament was again a success with 16 teams participating. In the "A" final the Elmer Ririe team won their 4th straight championship by defeating the Ether Coleman team. The "B" champions was the George Foggin team with a victory over the Burns Harker family. In the "C" final the Southeast community team defeated the S. Jackson team. The "D" division was won by the Vada James family as they defeated the Norm Cook family in the final. ******* What an exciting weekend we've had in Magrath during our Celebration! We've had excellent support from so many people. We took $2,390.75 from the bake sale with more donations coming in all the time. The dance profited us $602.32. We brought in $924.00 with the Quilt Raffle. Congratulations to Moyle Pilling who had the winning number. A great big "Thank You" to everyone who helped in any way in making this a very successful weekend. We can add $3,917.07 to $93,124.61 for a grand total of $97,041.68. ******* A wonderful community program was held at the conclusion of the Magrath Celebrations Saturday evening in the Tom Karren Gym. Wayne Miller was the Master of Ceremonies for the program which opened with a community chorus singing "They All Call It Canada" under the direction of Jerry Chatwin and accompanied by Sharon Ragan. Shirley Perry recited a poem "Hometown", which was followed by a children’s pioneer chorus directed by Laurel Bennett and accompanied by Marva Hatch. Two clogging numbers were performed by Olivia McClung and her students, and special guest Nadene Dow Forsyth performed a saxophone solo "Harlem Nocturne". Following these numbers a teen chorus performed "Standing On The Corner Watching All The Girls Go By" under the direction of Janet Hunt. L.B. Tanner, Eldon Coleman, Byng Beazer, and Craig Bennett sang "Dear to the Hearts and Gentle People" accompanied by Vinessa Hamilton. This was followed by a college chorus singing an original song "Happiness Is.". The concluding number was the Magrath Spirit of Alberta Marching Band under the direction of Jerry Chatwin performing "The Maple Leaf Forever" and "O Canada”. Special thanks to all those who performed and the many people who dedicated countless hours to making this production the success that it was. ******* On behalf of the Library/Museum Building Fund special events committee, I would like to thank the community for the tremendous support that was given to the Celebration Bake Sale. Thanks to all those that donated baking, to those that helped price and sell, to those that came to purchase, and to those who gave generous monetary donations. We really appreciate each and every one of you. It was a good experience working together and getting better acquainted. We hope to make this an annual event and welcome your suggestions to help us evaluate and improve. Thanks again for making this event such a success! SUMMER FIRE SAFETY CAMPAIGN GRASS FIRES The loss of life and property, and the many injuries which have been attributed to grass fires has become a major concern during the summer season. During the five year period of 1987 - 1991 some rather shocking statistics have been noted. A total of 2,697 grass fires have caused over $10 million in property losses, 2 deaths, and 56 injuries. 55 % of these fires were due to inadequate control of an open fire. Approximately 50% of these fires occurred on farms. Children playing with fire and vandalism are also two of the more dominant causes of grass fires. If you are planning to burn off debris, leaves, etc., ensure you enquire about burning permits at your local fire department. Here are a few tips to follow if your municipality allows you to conduct burning on your property: * Bum in a metal container with a sturdy wiremesh cover. CARRIAGE HOUSE THEATRE -Presents- "JURASSIC PARK" Showing through July 29 9:15 p.m. and 12:00 midnight nightly ******* "FREE WILLY" Showing July 30 August 5 at 9:15 p.m. nightly ******* THE BOX OFFICE WILL BE OPEN FROM 4:30 P.M. - 9:30 P.M. DAILY FOR LIVE THEATRE * Clear away all flammable and combustible materials for at least 10 feet around the contain. Note: If you are burning on a farm, clear all material away for at least 100 feet. * Consider prevailing wind direction and clearance from buildings and vehicles to avoid fire spread to valuable property. * Ask your local fire department about any special precautions needed. * ALWAYS keep a rake, shovel, water, and a fire extinguisher near by.
