TO All of Our Friends and Acquaintances: I wish to extend a very warm THANK YOU to each and everyone of you! Magrath has proven to be a very warm and hospitable town. Two and a half years ago we moved here against advice from everyone we knew, as they believed this town to be cold & dicky. I am very sad to leave Magrath because no where else have I felt the kindness and the love within a ccnminity.- I wish you all happiness and as a friend said to me as I stood in my boxes and mess: "The Past is behind-learn from it; the future is ahead- prepare for it; the present is here-live in it.". As I "Go R>r It" I hope the residents of Magrath will go for it too. Sincerely your friends. The Olsons. The Magrath Rod & Gun Club thanks Garden city Fertilizers for the donation of fertilizer for the com patch. We are sorry for the ommission. MR&G Club I am responding to the Mayors suggestion that money raised for the Gymnasium in excess of $75,000 should go elsewhere. The money was donated for the Tom Karren Gym, NOT the Arena. If the Arena needs more money then put a committe on it! Voice your opinions; let the Council and Mayor know your feelings. Robert B. Tanner 1 T Suraner holiday film special. HEALTH ALERT; HEMMDRRHAGIC COLITIS (E.CQLI 0157) Hemmorrhagic colitis is a newly recognized type, of food poisoning. It has commonly been referred to as "hamburger disease" or "B-B-Q season syndrome", because it has sometimes . been traced to under cooked meat. This disease is caused most commonly by a bacteria called E coli 0157. The bacteria produces a poison or toxin that damages.the . lining: of the intestine. While most people.: recover from the infection within .two weeks, in a very small number of cases, the E coli toxin results in a serious, sometimes fatal complication called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome or HUS. This illness affects the kidneys and blood and is especially dangerous in young children and the elderly. ■ The symptoms are severe stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea, two to eight days after eating contaminated food; dehydration; mild fever may be present and the illness lasts seven to ten days. Where does the disease come frcxn? Toxin producing E coli have been found in pork, beef, and poultry products. It is believed that the organism is normally present in food animals. In most cases, human infection has been linked with under cooked meat and unpasteurized milk. How do you avoid the disease? E coli is destroyed by cooking, pasteurization, and safe food preparation. To protect against E coli infection as well as infection from other bacteria such as Salmonella the following food preparation steps should be followed: COOK ALL MEATS THOROUGHLY. The center of hamburger patties should be brown, and juices should be clear. The safest way to determine if larger cuts of meat are thoroughly cooked is to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temp. Beef 60-75 degrees C (140-167 degrees F) Lamb 65-75 degrees C (149-167 degrees F) Pork 71-77 degrees C (160-170 degrees F) ' Poultry 85 degrees C (185 degrees F) Veal 80 degrees C (176 degrees F) SERVE COOKED MEATS IMMEDIATELY or keep them hot (60 degrees C or 140 degrees F). Don't let cooked meats sit at room temp. REFRIGERATE left over meats as soon as possible after the meal. Reheat all leftovers thoroughly to 74 degrees C (165 degrees F). REFRIGERATE or FREEZE meats as soon as possible after buying. THAW FROZEN MEATS IN THE REFIGERATOR, not at room tenp. WASH HANDS thoroughly before preparing food and after handling raw meats. PREPARE raw hamburger patties or other meats quickly, and either cook them right away, or put them in the refrigerator. Don't let raw meats sit at room temp. WASH all utensils, cutting boards and counters with hot, soapy water to prevent bacteria frcm raw meats contacting other foods. PLACE cooked meats on clean plates. Don't re-use utensils, plates or platters that have been in contact with raw meats. ' AVOID unpasteurized milk. What about treatment of the disease? Individuals with the symptoms should consult a doctor. Drinking lots of clear fluids is inportant. Medication to stop the diarrhea is not advised. The benefits if antibiotics against E coli are uncertain. For more information contact the Public Health Inspector at your local Health Unit. For Sale: 13 inch Michilen tire. Brand new. Ph.
