The number of farm fires in Alberta has been increasing. In 1977 there were 285 farm fires. In 1985 that number had increased to 961. Winter is coming. Every year many farmers lose their homes to fire. Unless you have a crystal ball, you have no guarantee your home will be untouched by fire. Have you thought about how you will protect the children and yourself from the cold if it's 40 below? In most cases there's not enough time to look for car keys, footwear and blankets, in fact, if you live in a trailer, you only have seconds to escape . before the whole thing goes up in flames. SUGGESTIONS FOR FIRE EMERGENCIES • Save yourself unnecessary heartache, and problems.be prepared!. Here are a few suggestions from the Farm Safety Program booklet "Fire on the Farm": Place a container (metal preferred) in a building away from the main house with the following contents: flashlight Clothing and footwear for each member of the family. No one needs Reebox for this, any old pair of shoes or boots that will provide some protection will do. First aid supplies. Blankets (2) Extra key for family vehicle. Food (dry fruit suggested). Check working conditions of smoke detectors. Check insurance policies for fire annually, fnow how to rescue farm animals from fire. Check out local fire fighting capabilities. DO NOT DEPEND ON YOUR NEIGHBORS - THEY MAY NOT BE HOME. ‘ The booklet "Fire Control on the Farm" plso contains information on fire extinguishers, burns, clothing and a fire prevention checklist. Have our own ambulance C a first }. 2. Magrath Golf Course tied into our Town water. 3. Two more farmer water co-ops also tied into our Town water. '4. Have a new tennis court and thanks to the local Magrath Lions Club, a few horse shoe pits in the same area. 5. The past two years we have started laying a better ell concentrate on our gravelled streets, thanks to the co-operation of the Cardston M.D., and the use of their oil truck. 6. Replaced the only remaining two blocks of old waterline, added one more block, making three blocks of net water line, and readied ■ three blocks for future paving. 7. A few blocks of irrigation ditch in eastern part of Town that was no longer useful was filled and levelled. .8. A ditch was dug and rip-rapped for town wate" works back flushing, . so it no longer floods a large, area of Taylor's pasters land. 9. We started issuing congratulatory certificates to those celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and'for every Sth ye^r thereafter. 10. Are now in the process of enlarging Jubilee Park to the south, thanks in part’to a generous parks grant from the Prov. Government. 11. Plans all but completed for watering the Magrath Cemetery. 12. Have straightened and improved a few blocks of irirgatxon .ditch on the west side of Town. 13. Started installing two new street lights and two more fire hydrants per year, when possible. 14. Town water supply system paid out in full. . 15. Pa-id .off one debenture on paving. 16. , Established a policy stating that minimum water flow to residences should be 5 gal/min. 17. Changed stop signs to yield signs throughout Town. The Town was involved partially with some of the following, but. we are grateful to all as they have greatly added to the improvement of the Town of Magrath: "1. Have a fine new Seniors Drop In Centre debt free, thanks mostly to the many donations in cash and®many hours of labor 2. Mark and Marie Passey have added a very fine Covered Wagon R.V. park on the southern edge of Town and are to be. congratulated for adding this facility to our Town. 3. Parrish and Heimbecker have been doing some major renovations to their elevator, which greatly improves our entrance to Town from the North. 4. Have a new gym about to be opened, and some major renovations to the school and older gym. Alot of work done here also by dedicated citizens for the Tom Karren Gym Fund. 5.
