Sheila Salmon was was second We take prize poem DISTRICT AGRICULTURIST REPORT Be Careful When Treating Seed: Farmers are advised not to threat their seed grain in anything that is likely to come in contact with feed for livestock or grain for human consumption unless the piece of equipment can be thoroughly cleaned. A farmer who recently treated his rapeseed in a grain auger and then used the same auger to move livestock feed ended up with 20 sick cows and 13 dead cows. Dr. Jack Horricks, plant pathologist with Alberta Agriculture, says a cement mixer or similar equipment can be used to treat rapeseed when only a small acreage is involved. In cases of large acreages, it would probably pay to buy a special rapeseed treating machine: They can be obtained from Western Industries, St. Gregor, Sask. The price is around $350. D.L. SPRING IN MAY ' As I was walking down the lane I thought of the beautiful trees I stopped and gazed, and listened To the soft hum of the bees. I closed my eyes and took a And my lungs were filled With the sweet fragrances, Of the lilac’s perfume that Sauntering a little further ___ I wantched the roses in bloom, They nodded and swayed in the gentle breeze And cleared up the world and its gloom. I thought, roses are different, They give you a happy thought Their glowing velvet petals The sweetest fragrance ever sought. I slowly gazed up, and looked in the sky And thought, "What a beautiful lane." I am glad that I cam to this place today, To breathe in the first day of May.
