Give me a call if you would like me to pop out to your place for a visit. Leona Quantz, D.H.E. DISTRICT HOME ECONOMIST NEWS NOTES It's summertine and that means holidays! I have a list of appliances you should check before leaving home: Refrigerator: Fridges should be cleaned out with baking soda solution to combat lingering odors. You should freeze leftovers and use up fresh fruit and meat. An empty fridge that is not opened requires less energy to keep it cold so you can turn down the temperature. Washer & Dryer: It is a good iclea to turn off the water supply to your washer. This will prevent leaking valves or flooding if hoses or washers fail. Do not leave any clothes in the dryer. The smallest amount of moisture can cause mildew. Freezers: .1 get many calls from people who come back from holidays to a non-working deep freeze. Double check that your freezer is plugged in and working before you leave. You may want a neighbor to check it periodically if there is a power failure. Dishwasher: This appliance should be left clean and empty. Dirty dishes will mold and cause odors that are difficult to eliminate. Small Appliances: Unplug all electrical equipment that is not necessary for security. Microwaves, televisions, computers and video recorders can be damaged by power surges. After your last minute ironing, unplug the iron. Water should also be drained from steam irions. Smoke Detectors: Push the button the smoke detector to test if it is working. Security Devices: Timers which turn on lights and radios in the home are security treasures. Safety lights which glow in the dark and especially good for. bedroom locations. The key to security is to keep your house looking like it is lived in. Happy holidays, and bring back pictures so we can all enjoy the trip!! YOU ASKED.What does a District Home Economist do on a farm call? One of the services I can offer you is a visit to your farm for any concern. Some examples of visits are setting up a recordkeeping system for the farm or home; planning a community event; preserving fruits and vegetables; sewing problems; and viewing a farm operation.
