May is national speech and hearing month in Canada and the U.S. A special effort is being made to acquaint citizens of several aspects of speech, language and hearing. In the past few years much research has been generated concerning language disorders in preschool children. One aspect of children's behavior which has shown to be critical is the cognitive aspect of language in play. At the two and three year age level, the child should be encouraged co and be able to perform the following play behaviors: 1. A child should perform a familiar action in a new context (3.g. when a child is given a blanket when expect to sleep, can he . 2. A child should perform a familiar action on a new object in a new context (e.g. using the example above, give the child a piece of newspaper, say "pretend this is a blanket") 3. A child should perform a familiar action on another object (e.g. give the child a doll and tell the child to have the doll walk, etc.) 4. A child should perform a familiar action which someone else does (e.g. give the child a doll and tell the child to "do what mom does".) 5. A child at this age should use an object to represent another object, (e.g. give the child a cup and say "show me what else you can do with it". The child can use the cup as a hat, shoe, or mitten). 6. Finally, at this 2 to 3 year old level, a child should be able to pretend to b«5 another person or object. At the thdee to four year level, a . child should Be encouraged to perform the following play behaviors: 1. Children at 3 and 4 shouTd be able to Pantomime the use of objects when shown pictures such as a ball, spoon, pencil, comb and toothbrush. 2. They should be able to pretend a series of activities, where objects are present (e.g. have the child pretend he is having a birthday party, give them play dishes). 3. Finally at this age level the child can pretend a series of activ-a child does not ’’pretend to sleep") ities with others (present a doll, see if they will include the doll, other "pretend children" or you.) These are just a few of the play activities which may help your child from the ages of 2 to 4 years develop the cognitive or "thinking" aspects of language.
