Elections were held in September of '86 and the candidates showed some of the most origional and outragious campaigns this school has ever seen. Soon after elections and the executives were chosen, Students' Council was on their way to planning a great and successful year. During the year, Students' Council organized many activities. The dances and sockhops seemed to be the most popular among the student body. One sockhop held befor Christmas had a very special theme. It was called "Feed the Hungry." Students gave one item of nonperishable food at the door for admittance. All of the food items collected went to the needy in our city. Students' Council this year also held an "Air Band" contest. About 15 groups entered and then later on 6 final groups preformed in front of the student body and selected teacher judges. This year's ski trip to Fernie was the best turn out this school has ever had. It took 3, yes 3 buses to transport all of the little ski bums and also the big ski bums (like Mr. Ramsay) to the slopes. All in all this year has been really great for both students and teachers. The members of council have learned a lot and hope that everyone has had as much fun as we've had!PRINCIPAL This, my last yearbook message at Wilson Junior High, is dedicated to the 60+ teachers and support staff who played a significant role in the development of one of the finest Junior High Schools in this province. Teaching at the Junior High level is very demanding. It is no fluke that the academic and cocurricular successes that we have enjoyed at Wilson rests squarely on the shoulders of the staff. They have proven themselves to be committed, organized, caring, competent and prepared to go that extra mile (kilometre) to make thing work. During the time I have had to reflect upon my years at Wilson there are always staff members who come to mind when thinking of events, programs, activities and experiences. Thanks to all of them the students have been the real winners. Peter Mortimer, an internationally acclaimed researcher who studies effective schools, referred to a special condition found in all effective schools. He refers to it as a "positive and intangible feeling one has by just being there." To the staff of Wilson, I had that feeling working with you for four and a half very enjoyable years. Bands need money for music and travel; teams need uniforms, equipment and travel funds; clubs need equipment; the yearbook needs film, cameras, lenses etc. In September Wilson was rich with ideas but cash poor.until KIA. Mrs. Allen and Ms. K. Ichino went to Calgary for a conference and brought back the idea for KIA — the "Know It All" contest. They put the idea to the staff who immediately set out to solicit prizes and support. A whole array of prizes ranging from color TV's to tube socks were obtained. Mr. Stefan spent hours putting together a riotous pep rally modelled on an old fashioned revival meeting. And then the students of Wilson really went to work. They studied until their heads bulged with facts. They wore out pairs of shoes getting pledges. Three bus loads of Wilson Wonders hit the slopes at Fernie early in January. Cold weather didn’t deter anyone. Rosy cheeks and frozen smiles were the order of the day. Not to mention flying leaps and terrible tumbles'. Why, there was only one broken leg. Judging by the action here, everyone had a great time. RADWILSON PEER SUPPORT TEAM The Peer Support Team at Wilson consists of a group of students who have been selected for their ability to be good listeners and to show concern for their peers. The team is divided into two main groups: a) those who are going through training (JUNIOR) and b) those who completed the training the previous school year.(SENIOR) The junior group spends at least twenty-five to thirty hours in training sessions throughout the year. When the training is finished, they become part of the Peer Support Team of Alberta, which entitles them to be recognized as a peer support member in any program in Alberta in either the junior or senior high schools. The senior group helps students deal with conflicts, helps with the orientation of new students, and helps students deal with personal problems. This group also organizes and runs activities in the school like the Wilson Calorie Counters. It has been a great pleasure to work with these dedicated young people. You can tell a friend anything without the fear of him or her laughing at you but hopefully understanding your feelings. They might even share that feeling. It's not necessary to tell a friend how you feel about them but tell them anyway. It helps the relationship bloom. Friendship is special because without expecting it you receive an overshelming amount and your friend receives even more, without either of you at any point realizing it. True friendship is forever and if your friendship is ever in trouble, do all that you can to protect it. Friendship is worth more than gold and when you lose it, you lose more than a friend. You lose a part of yourself. You often don't realize what you've had until it's gone. A friend at Wilson is the most important friend you'll ever have. "The man" OOO-EEE Baby!!!!MURDER HUNT Murder'. Whodunit? That was the question. Calvin, the two-timing owner. Diana, the poor little rich woman. Jessica, the calm secretary whose parrions lurked underneath. These were the victims of Spa 9-7. Suspects filled the scenes of the crimes. They trapped themselves. Each had reasons. They were driven by anger, greed, lust and revenge. The clues were intertwined and slyly arranged. All were simple, and all were ignored. Even Inspector Gowans was baffled. All he could mutter was, "Fishy, very fishy." 9-7 learned a lot from this experience. One of the most important things was that we can work with our teachers and still have a good time. And believe me, we had a great time. The most important lesson we learned was that of cooperation. The whole class had to pull together and give it their all. And everyone in 9-7 did. Whatever it was - an actor or a stage person, we all worked hard together. If it wasn't for total cooperation, Spa 9-7 would never have left our creative classroom. Spa 9-7 was a big learning experience and great fun for the whole class. As we look back on our days at Wilson Junior High, I'm sure Spa 9-7 will play a big part in our happy memories.
