Once again, Wilson is tops! This year the Senior Girls' Volleyball team was coached by Mrs. Del bello. Their first tournament was the St. Francis Tournament where they placed third. The second tournament they were in was held here in Wilson and the team came in second. They had an extremely close game with Paterson in the finals. The Warqueens won most of the season's games. Nancy Voort comments, "I must have worked hard 'cause my knee pads had holes in them!" Maureen McAvoy This year the Senior Boys' Volleyball team played with a great deal of effort, but not always successfully. In the city league standings, the team had 4 wins and 4 losses. The conciliation round of the City Tournament was won by the boys, but they lost the semifinals. An overall third place was won by the 9 players. Although the girls won only 2 of their 6 season games, they learned a great deal about basketball and they had fun. One problem the team faced was not having enough practice time. Mr. Holt and Mr. Fekete, the coaches, comment, "It was a strong team, but the girls weren't serious enough about the game. If we'd had more practices, the team could have made it to the finals." The team looks forward to a better season next year. Scoref The Junior Boys' Basketball team won the championship making them the best in the city. Their record was 8 wins and no losses. This is the best record the Junior Boys' Basketball team has ever had in the city. The final game was played on February 28, at Wilson, against St. Francis. The top player of the game was Gord Bloudoff. "The team worked very hard to win the championship," commented Mr. Weitz, the coach. Congratulations coaches and runners!- MTSCeXIAMOUS60Cjct up cvkC Boogie What's the next best thing to school? Why, the school dances, of course! There are usually 5 dances in the school year: Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and the formal grade nine grad dance. The dances run from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, and Duran Duran are some of the groups that students "rocked" to this year. One of the main attractions at the dances are the decorations. Students' Council puts hours of time into creating the elaborate decorations. At Christmas, Santa's sleigh, pulled by reindeer, slid across the wall. The walls were overflowing with 100 hearts for the Valentine's Day dance. Thanks to all of the teachers who volunteered their time to supervise the dances. "Hey, what are you waiting for? Let's get up and boogie!" Julie Brisco 61 Qeaver Jjasfi This year's Nickle Carnival was a great success. "Approximately $700. was raised, and everyone had fun," comments Mr. Zaugg. Each advisor group decided on the type of booth it wanted to run, and then set up for carnival night. There were challenging and exciting booths: Coconut Throw, Marriage and Divorce Chapel, Basketball Toss, Slave Auction, Pillow Fighting, and a Trivia Booth. The money raised is used to support Wilson's clubs, field trips and co-curricular activities. Jackie Chernoff was thrilled to be a slave for Brien Watts and looks forward to never being so humiliated again in her life. Mr. McHardy's only comment was "It was so noisy!" The Nickle Carnival helped to get the 1983-84 school year off to a positive and prosperous start. Joey Hayes 62 28 JndivlduaC Cubes A cool -30° froze the 25 fearless students and 3 supervisors, Mr. Clack, Mr. Legg, and Mr. Boer, who went on Hunter Training's cross-country ski trip. The skiing took place in Waterton on Dec. 22. A few minor injuries occurred. Joey Hayes had his tongue frozen to his braces, Gerald Chernoff froze his foot to his sock, which was frozen to his boot. A nose dive was done by Mr. Legg as he was trying to navigate a dip in the trail. Only Mr. Clack went through the dip on his feet, and comments, "Everyone was a dip except for me!" Jeff Deuschle was a "real cool dude" with his snowy white moustache and eyebrows. The overnight Outdoor Ed. trip found students and chaperones building shelters, cooking over open fires, and target shooting. The cooking must have been excellent; Marna Oseen couldn't do up his jeans. He claims he was trying to keep warm with all his extra clothes on, but we know better, the food was great! Parents and students were entertained by Wilson's music students in the Christmas tradition. All of the bands and the choirs performed in the concert. A true highlight of the evening was provided by the Wilson Staff Choir. Wearing decorated paper bags, the staff entered the hushed auditorium that soon errupted into gales of laughter. Soloist, Mr. Zook, gave an Elvis style rendition of "Jingle Bells." A special thanks to Mr. Knights for organizing the concert and to Mrs. Knights for accompanying the choral groups.Cfoocf uun Food hampers for Christmas were made by Wilson students for the first time this year. This sensational idea was Mrs. Baumback's. Elaborate hampers were made by student advisor groups, and prizes were awarded in different categories. Mr. McHardy's room took "The Best Decorated", and Mr. Clack's group's hamper was judged "The Most Christmassy". Mrs. Switzer's and Mr. Redpath's groups also won boxes of chocolates for their creations. The Salvation Army collected the hampers and distributed them to needy families in Lethbridge. Mrs. Baumback says, "Wilson has outdone itself. The students learned that Christmas isn't just receiving, you have to give, too." Shanna WardWiCson ‘Bakes “Straight jrom the Sneart j On February 14, there was a band bake sale and cake auction. Over $1000.00 was raised for the band retreats in March and for the choir trip in May. Shanna Ward comments, "The auction and sale was much more exciting than last year's, and the cakes were auctioned off at much higher pri ces." There were many activities going on. People won cakes on the Cake Walk and Mark Campbell from CHEC radio station judged the baking. It was no wonder that Wally Hill and Doug Jameson from CJ0C had trouble directing the band when they had two new musicians, Mr. Ramsay and Mr. Gowans playing in the ranks. Wally and Doug ended up with pie on their faces for their efforts. Mrs. Azacrate was the lucky winner of a raffle; throwing a pie in Mr. Stefan1' face was her prize. Mr. Knights says, "It was a good evening for the parents and the students. It gave the parents a chance to hear all of Wilson's music groups." A special thanks goes to Mrs. Brenda Guinn for organizing the evening. Tamara Jackson Shelley KruchkywichMusic Maker* Once again Wilson can be proud of its extensive music programs. Over 200 students are involved in bands, small ensembles, choirs and strings groups. In order to prepare for the Kiwanis Music Festival in spring, the grade 7 and 8 bands each spent 2 days at retreats at Southern Alberta Bible Camp. One of the highlights of the grade 7 retreat was going on a hayride during a blizzard. Rumor has it that shoes went missing on the grade 7 retreat. Could this be true? The Concert Choir went on a trip to Calgary. It performed at several schools and at the Calgary Kiwanis Festival. Many students did well in the local Kiwanis Music Festival. Congratulations! These days are fun because we wear things that are so out-of-style, or things that look terrible with what we are wearing. It's fun to look at other people's ideas, especially the teacher's! Mrs. Wallis quips, "Crazy clothes Fridays 'hat' to 'tie' us together so we won't be 'erring' in our ways." "I like to tie one on with a good topper!" comments Mr. Robinson. Mrs. Zimmerman would like to see a program of Kangaroo Court to follow these days for all those who didn't participate. Myrna Del a Cruz enjoyed getting her dad's tie out that had previously been smothered in moth balls. Sandra Voort Greg Brown Tamara Snider 70The jTisto nans Back: Steven Norris, Sandra Voort Have you ever thought about how a .yearbook is made? Faceprints was made by a club this year instead of by a grade nine option class. We started out with about 25 club members, but our numbers dwindled to about 10 in April. Two groups of people worked to put Faceprints together. Over $1,600.00 was raised from local businesses by the advertising campaign, headed by Mr. Ramsay. This money enabled us to sell the Yearbook for $10.00 rather than $15.00 to the students. Mrs. Young spearheaded the group that designed, wrote, and pasted-up the actual yearbook. Thousands of students' and teachers' hours went into the production of Faceprints. New sections were added this year; full colour pages were produced for the first time. A yearbook is a unique and special memory collection. Without Mrs. Young, Mr. Ramsay, Mrs. Bailey, and their gangs of student laborers, you would not be reading the book you are now holding!
