Les aléas naturels engendrés par la dégradation du permafrost dans les montagnes densément peuplées ainsi que le rôle du permafrost dans l’évolution du modelé de montagne expliquent que le permafrost de montagne est un objet de recherche à la fois important et fascinant. Les montagnes constituent une part importante des continents et des régions de permafrost. Outre les chaînes de montagne des latitudes moyennes, une grande partie du permafrost de l’Arctique et l’Antarctique est soumise à des processus caractéristiques du permafrost de haute montagne. Cet article propose un aperçu des faits, concepts et termes les plus importants qui concernent le permafrost de montagne, puis présente les effets possibles du changement climatique sur celui-ci. Il fournit également une base qui permet d’aborder une littérature scientifique qui est essentiellement écrite en anglais. Natural hazards related to the degradation of permafrost in densely populated mountains as well as the role of permafrost in landscape evolution make mountain permafrost a fascinating and important research field. Mountains make up a significant proportion of the global land mass and of the global permafrost area. Besides mid-latitude mountain ranges, large proportions of Arctic and Antarctic permafrost are subject to processes and exhibit phenomena that are typical for mountain permafrost. This article provides an overview of the most important facts, concepts, and terms related to mountain permafrost, introduces possible effects of climate change, and provides key starting points for further reading in the scientific literature that is largely written in English.
