Područje rasprostiranja metanskih hidrata uključuje velikim dijelom sedimentne stijene na dnu mora duž kontinentalnih rubova te područja vječnoga leda na Arktiku. Nalazišta metana rasprostranjena na području oko Arktika relativno su plitka i dubine su do 150 m (područje ESAS), dok je na ostalim nalazištima dubina prostiranja hidrata veća od 500 m. Upravo ta plitka podmorska nalazišta metanskih hidrata zbog nestabilnosti, promjena tlaka i temperature na morskom dnu predstavljaju najveću opasnost za otpuštanje metana s morskoga dna, koje zbog relativno male dubine mora dospijeva do atmosfere. Ispuštanje metana u velikim količinama u kratkom vremenskom intervalu, može dovesti do promjene koncentracija metana u atmosferi, a time i do klimatskih promjena. Abstract: Methane gas hydrates are a big energy resource potential, but they can also play a big role in climate change in the future. They are widespread in sea sediments below the sea floor along the continental margins and they can also be found in Arctic permafrost. Deposits of methane hydrates at high latitudes are close to the ocean floor, at water depths of 150 m (ESAS), in low latitudes they are generally found below 500 m. These shallow deposits of methane hydrates represents a potencial hazard because methane can be relised, and reach the atmosphere because of seafloor instability, especially in the arctic area at ESAS. Hydrates may affect climate because when warmed or depressurized, they decompose and dissociate methane into water and atmosphere. Discharge of large amounts of methane into the atmosphere could cause global warming.
