Utopijsko mišljenje transcendira postojeću stvarnost zamišljajući utopijski svijet, ali istovremeno traži u njoj mogućnosti približavanja tom utopijskom svijetu. U tom smislu, utopijsko mišljenje preduvjet je svake društvene promjene, jer dopušta prvo kritičku analizu postojećeg stanja, a zatim i razmatranje različitih mogućih opcija kako promijeniti to stanje. U tom procesu promjene kao mjerilo prihvatljivosti i kvalitete djelovanja postavljaju se utopijski ideali, odnosno univerzalne humane vrijednosti. Pošto ljudi djeluju prema vlastitom sustavu vrijednosti, kao jedan od koraka u procesu transformacije nameće se ideja institucionalizacije vrijednosti. Putevi transformacije su mnogobrojni, a mogu se razvrstati u tri grupe strategija transformacije. Dok ni jedne od tih strategija zasebno ne mogu stvoriti radikalnu društvenu promjenu, njihov je zadatak da pripremaju uvjete za potencijalnu radikalnu promjenu u budućnosti. Takva mogućnost je opravdana postojanjem nespoznatljivih i nenamjeravanih kumulativnih posljedica društvenog djelovanja, ali i činjenicom da su i sami zakoni prema kojima se promjena odvija podložni promjeni. Odgovornost je utopijskog mišljenja fleksibilno istraživati svaki sljedeći korak društvene promjene, i na taj način i širiti polje mogućeg. Utopian thought transcends the existing reality by imagining a utopian world, but at the same time, it looks for the possibilities of coming nearer to this utopian world inside the existing reality. In that sense, utopian thought is the precondition for every social change, because it allows,firstly,the critical analysis of the existing situation, and secondly, the consideration of various possible options for changing that situation. In this process of change, utopian ideals, that is, universal human values, are set as a measure of plausibility and quality of action. Since human beings act according to their own value system, it could be argued that the idea of institutionalization of values is one of the steps in the transformation process.The paths of transformation are manifold, yet they can be divided into three groups of transformation strategies. While no single group of these strategies is able to create radical social change, their task is to prepare the conditions for possible radical change in the future. Such possibility is justified by the existence of yet unknowable and unintentional cumulative consequences of social action, but also by the fact that the very laws of change are subject to change. It is the responsibility of utopian thought to flexibly search for every next step in the process of social change, and through that, to also extend the field of what is possible.
