Journal kept by Hayes just prior to the start of the Open Polar Sea Expedition. Inscription reads: "To Dr. I.I. Hayes from his friend Francis Lieber. Common Journal. Given and commenced on Waterloo Day, 1860." Includes photograph, possibly of Lieber.
