Oil and gas ventures, new fishing grounds, tourism as well as maritime transportation spur political and economic interests in the region. The need to coordinate different sectors and interests has been addressed through elaboration of ecosystem-based integrated management strategies in different parts of the Arctic. The Russian Barents Sea, however, despite anticipated growth of economic activity and looming conflicts associated with it, remains to be administered on the base of traditional sectoral approach to planning economic activities and environmental protection. This paper aims to analyse the current state of marine environmental management in Russia on the example of the Barents Sea region. The study will assess the recent policy developments in Russia in the field of sustainable management of resources and economic activities in the Barents Sea as well as discuss prospects for an integrated management framework.
