CONFERENCE HISTORY With more than 120 Nobel Laureates across all of its campuses and the fi rst ever to reach 450 NCAA Championships, the Pac-12 Conference is synonymous with both academic excellence and athle c success, having earned the nickname the "Conference of Champions." The Pac-12 opened a new chapter its long and storied history on July 1, 2011 with the addi on of the University of Utah and the University of Colorado. The roots of the Pac-12 Conference go back more than 80 years to December 15, 1915, when the Pacifi c Coast Conference (PCC) was founded at a mee ng at the Oregon Hotel in Portland, Ore. Original membership consisted of four schools: the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). All s ll are charter members of the Conference. Pacifi c Coast Conference play began in 1916. One year later, Washington State College (now Washington State University) was accepted into the Conference, and Stanford University joined in 1918. In 1922, the PCC expanded to eight teams with the admission of the University of Southern California and the University of Idaho. The University of Montana joined the Conference in 1924, and in 1928, the PCC grew to 10 members with the addi on of UCLA. The Pacifi c Coast Conference competed as a 10-team league un l 1950, with the excep on of 1943-45, when World War II curtailed intercollegiate athle c compe on to a minimum. In 1950, Montana resigned from the Conference and joined the Mountain States Conference. The PCC con nued as a nine-team Conference through 1958. In 1959, the PCC was dissolved and a new Conference was formed-the Athle c Associa on of Western Universi es. Original AAWU membership consisted of California, Stanford, Southern California, UCLA, and Washington. Washington State became a member in 1962, while Oregon and Oregon State joined in 1964. In 1968, the name Pacifi c-8 Conference was adopted. Ten years later, on July 1, 1978, the University of Arizona and Arizona State University were admi ed and the Pacifi c-10 Conference became a reality. In 1986-87, the league took on a new look, expanding to include 10 women's sports. Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men's and 11 women's sports. Edwin N. Atherton was named the Conference's fi rst Commissioner in 1940. He has been succeeded by Victor O. Schmidt (1944), Thomas J. Hamilton (1959), Wiles Hallock (1971), Thomas C. Hansen (1983) and current Commissioner Larry Sco (2009). The Pac-12 Conference offi ces are located 25 miles east of San Francisco in Walnut Creek, Calif. "CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS" The Pac-12 Conference won nine NCAA tles during the 2011-12 academic year, the most by any conference. It marks the 11th me in the last 12 years-and the 46th me in 52 years-the Pac-12 has led or ed all conferences in NCAA championships won. California swept the men's and women's swimming tles, Stanford won the women's soccer and women's water polo crowns, and USC captured NCAA championships in men's water polo and men's tennis. Other NCAA crowns came from Oregon in women's indoor track & fi eld, UCLA in women's volleyball and Arizona in baseball. The Pac-12 championship tradi on includes 451 all- me team tles won by league ins tu ons, with 306 men's tles and 145 women's championships. The Pac-12, by far, leads all conferences with nearly 200 more championships than the next closest conference (Big Ten). The moniker "Conference of Champions®" has been earned by the number of tles, but also the depth of success. Pac-12 teams have won championships in 27 of the 37 Division I sports the NCAA sponsors and has reached double digit tles in 19 of those sports. The Learfi eld Director's Cup, presented annually to the country's top intercollegiate athle c program, was awarded to Stanford for a record 18th consecu ve year in 2011-12. The Pac-12 placed four ins tu ons in the top 10, with UCLA (4th), USC (6th) and California (7th) joining the Cardinal. Utah Athle cs Director Dr. Chris Hill (le ) and U. ESPN PAC-12 BOWL ARRANGEMENTS The Pac-12 Conference has agreements with seven bowl partners over the four-year cycle that kicked in for the 2010 season. The lineup is led by the Rose Bowl presented by VIZIO, which is the des na on for the Pac-12 champion, unless said champion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the fi nal Bowl Championship Series rankings. If that were the case, the Pac-12 champion would play in the Discover BCS Na onal Championship Game. Regardless of the disposi on of the Pac-12 champion, a second Pac- 12 team may be selected for an at-large berth in the Bowl Championship Series in any given year and other Pac-12 bowl partner arrangements provide for that occurance. In addi on to the Rose Bowl presented by VIZIO, Pac-12 bowl partners include the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio (No. 2 pick), the Bridgepoint Educa on Holiday Bowl in San Diego (No. 3 pick), the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso (No. 4 pick), the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas (No. 5 pick), the Kra Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco (No. 6 pick) and the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque (No. 7 pick).

7 pick).
