DR. A. RAY OLPIN President of the University of Utah Dr. ERNEST L. WILKINSON President of Brigham Young University Friend Of The Redskins For a man who has done more for more Indians than anyone this side of Hollywood and the U. S. Cavalry, Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, president of Brigham Young University, seems to take a paradoxical delight in being a thorn in the side of the Ute institution! In a few short years Chief Ute Barrister Wilkinson has done an outstanding job of turning the Provo school into a booming university. BYU tom-tom thumpers now claim that BYU has more southerners than Southern Methodist, more saints than St. Mary's, fewer sinners than Cincinnati. Keeping a weather eye on these developments is Dr. Wilkinson's long-time friend and colleague, Dr. A. Ray Olpin, president of the University of Utah. Big chief over a pretty big tribe of Redskins himself, Dr. Olpin thinks it a healthy thing for higher education in Utah to get all the shots in the arm possible. Friendly rivalry has long marked the association of these two educators, just as it has marked the past 30 football games between the two schools. Utah has won 25 of them, BYU one, while four have ended on even terms. The nation is still talking about that classic in 1953 which burnt out TV tubes from Washington (AC) to Washington (DC). Our heartiest welcome to an energetic neighbor, his student body and his football team! Lou had one of his finest days against the tough Tigers from Columbia. He ran the ball eight times for 41 yards, received four passes for 38 yards, had an interception return good for 23 yards, and kept the Tigers in trouble with his fine punting. Besides this, he was a demon on defense and made several fine tackles on the Missouri backs. Lou has had a great season so far in 1955. He has carried the ball 20 times for 140 yards and 7.0 average per carry, has caught 12 passes for 120 yards, has punted 12 times for a 40.0 average, and is the team leader in kick-off returns. Coach Jack Curtice calls Lou "A real team leader. As Co-Captain of the squad he has set an example for the rest of his teammates to follow that has made this one of the hardest working squads I have ever coached." * # * * Chester Franklin, a Junior guard, was picked by his teammates as the outstanding lineman in last week's Missouri game. Chet consistently broke through the big Tiger line to down the ball carrier in his tracks, and on offense did a fine job of opening up the holes for his own, backs. Franklin, who was a star performer on the Elko High eleven during his prep days, was picked by Jack Curtice as a real prospect during his sophomore year. This season he has shown what a fine judge of football material Curtice really is. In each of the Utes' three non-conference openers the speedy guard has done a tremendous job. The University of Utah is honored to welcome more than 2,000 musicians, making up 32 bands and representing four states, to the Redskins' Eighth Annual Band Day. Bands from Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada will participate in mass band rehearsals, a pre-game parade in the Ute Stadium at 6:15 p.m., and two mass band selections beginning at 7:45 p.m. Director Ron Gregory calls this "The largest group of high school bands we have ever had for Band Day. We are 40% over any total of previous participants. It's a real thrill to have so many fine young .musicians helping us in our band project. The purpose of Band Day is to show a large public audience the fine work being carried on in our high schools in instrumental music, and these groups, with their fine directors, are an excellent example." 24 t i e ! Back: Dan, "Hap", and Dick. LrBBtRf IN ACTION Back in 1921 a local newspaper carried the names of several Salt Lake City grade schoool students who had not been absent or tardy during the entire year and among these was Evert Lybbert. The article went on to explain that this record was achieved despite the fact that Salt Lake had suffered one of its most severe flu epidemics in many years. Now, 34 years later, this same Evert Lybbert has made so many outstanding records in school, the athletic world and business that it would take several newspaper articles to name them all. The same determination that made the very young "Hap" Lybbert a big success in grade school has carried through to make him a success in later life. "Hap" attended the University of Utah from September, 1927, to June, 1931, where he received his degree of Bachelor of Science in the field of Business. He had one of the the most illustrious athletic careers of any man in Redskin history, winning letters in football and basketball during his tenure at the University. Each year that "Hap" played on the Ute grid team they won a conference championship, and he was named All Rocky Mountain Conference Guard in his senior year. Lybbert was invited to play in the East-West Shrine game in 1931, but had to decline because of basketball in which he played regular four seasons. The speedy hardcourter was captain of the Rocky Mountain Conference Championship Redskins in 1931 and was chosen All-Conference along with two of the area's all-time court greats, "Brick" Breeden and "Cat" Thompson of Montana. This same year "Hap" won the school's Senior Athletic and Scholarship award. Additional honors won by the all-around Lybbert were: Member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and chosen on the national All Sigma Chi Football Squad in 1931, Owl and Key, Skull and Bones, Score Club, and Scabbard and Blade. After graduation the versatile Ute went to Washington, D. C, and played professional football with the Washington Mohawks football team which is now known as the Washington Redskins. During this time he attended Benjamin Franklin University in the evenings to get his degrees as Bachelor of Commercial Science and Master of Commercial Science. In 1938 he moved to Los Angeles, California, and married the former Alice Boden on Nov. 12, 1932. "Hap" entered the Army in May, 1942, and is now a Major in the Army Reserve. In 1946 he returned to Salt Lake City and became a Certified Public Accountant, and added honors to an already illustrious career by becoming President of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants and a Member of the Council of the American Institute of Accountants. He is at present a Member of the Advisory Council of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants, and to show a keen interest in his old school, "Hap" is a member of the University of Utah Athletic Board. 34 UTAH'S BIGGEST SELECTION OF BUILDING MATERIALS Complete Building, Remodeling or Repair Service . . . including low-cost financing , , . available in "ONE-STOP" LUMBER: Pine, dimension, flooring, hardwoods. C. L. BANKS T O N I G H T ' S GAME In taking on Oregon, Idaho, and Missouri, the University of Utah's 1955 football team has tackled one of the toughest pre-season schedules in Redskin history. The fact that they were able to win two of the three contests, and only the third by the narrowest of margins, is evidence of the fine team Coach Jack Curtice has this year. Tonight's contest with Brigham Young is considered by Coach Curtice as a crucial game in this year's slate. For the past two years the Cougars have given the Utes all they could handle and Curtice looks for more of the same tonight. In 1953 Utah was favored by four touchdowns and edged the Brighams 33-32, and last year Utah was a two-touchdown favorite and salvaged a really close 12-7 wm. After last week's fine intersectional victory over Missouri, Utah must guard against a let-down and Cactus Jack has warned his boys all week that they will have to be in top form to whip the Cougars.
