C O M 1 UTAH SWIMMING AND DIVING Utah swimming and diving is looking to make a splash as it enters its fi h year of compe on in the always rigorous Pac-12 Conference. "We have so many athletes that have the talent to swim at this level, they just have never done it before. You have to get over the nerves and you have to build the confidence to train at this kind of level and some mes it means just ge ng a year under your belt to figure that out. That big group of freshmen that we have, has that experience now and we expect big things from them moving forward." Utah Women S na Colleou is one of the key returnees for the Utes. At the Pac-12 Championships, she took sixth in the 200 breast with a me of 2:10.61 and eight in the 100 breast with a me of 1:01.31. She then went on to race at the NCAA Championships. Diver Amanda Casillas finished 11th in the pla orm event with 473.50 total points, 23rd in the one-meter (256.85 points) and 31st in the three-meter (250.70 points) at Zones. She also posted a top-10 finish in the one-meter at the Pac12 Championships. In the finals of the 500 free, sophomore Maddie Meisel returns a er notching the third-fastest me in school history in the 500 free at the Pac-12 Championships. She also recorded Utah's secondfastest me ever in the 1650 free, also at the Pac12 Championships. Brianna Francis set Utah's second fastest mark all- me in the 400 IM and advanced to the NCAA Championships in the event while Megan Kawaguchi earned a top-10 finish in the 100 back at the Pac-12 Championships. "On the women's side, we knew it was going to be tough because we graduated a few student-athletes that competed for us at the NCAA Championships last season, so there is going to be a li le rebuilding. However, our younger swimmers have really had some nice performances and we have another really talented class coming in next year, so the future is very bright." The Utes added 11 newcomers to the roster this season including Jordan Anderson, Makenzie Caufield, Madison Cock, Nicole Ford, Kris ne Pataray, Olivia Payne, Genevieve Robertson, Gillian St. John, Alex Stein, Julienne Tadena and Darby Wayner. Robertson, hailing from Guelph, Ontario will be swimming next to Colleou in the breast events. She currently has put up the fourth-fastest me in the Pac-12 in the 2:14.29 while Anderson has also exceled early in her career, ranking in the top 10 among Pac-12 swimmers in a few events. 2 SEASON OUTLOOK Utah Men The Utah men's swimming & diving team capped off its 2014-15 season by finishing 22nd and se ng a school record for points at the NCAA Championships. A er a successful year in the pool, All-American Bence Kiraly looks to add to his accolades. Last season, he placed 12th in the 500 free with a me of 4:13.83 at the NCAA Championships. He also recorded three new school records se ng new marks in the 500 free (4:13.83), 1000 free (8:54.11) and 1650 free (14:41.86), which were all set at NCAA's. On the diving side, All-American Jacob Crayne broke a 10-year record in the three-meter, scoring 438.95 points at the Pac-12 Championships. At Zones, he finished 13th on pla orm with a total score of 604.20 points. Josiah Purss is coming back stronger than ever a er suffering a season-ending injury last season. The Utes also bring back Kris an Kron, who recorded a NCAA B standard- me and Utah's third fastest mark all- me in the 400 IM also came away with Utah's second-fastest mark in the 200 back. "I thought last season was another step in the right direc on. We lost a big group of seniors so we knew that was going to be tough to replace, but we brought in a very good freshman class. That group was great, but it was a very big learning curve for them as well. About half of the men's team that swam at the Pac-12 Championships were freshmen and that bodes well for the future of this team. We s ll managed to put up a lot of fast mes, won a lot of meets and really ended the season with one of the best men's teams in recent history." Utah won its first nine duel meets last season with its only loss coming in the regular-season finale against USC. The men welcomed six newcomers, Cole Avery, Connor Cain, Daniel McArthur, Colten Montgomery, Keaton Quinn, Daniel Theriault and Paul Unger. Schedule The Pac-12 brands itself as the Conference of Champions and it came through during the 201415 season with Cal capturing the women's tle and falling just short in its quest for a men's crown. But Utah's reputation as an athletics power was established long before it joined the "Conference of Champions." Football is 628-435-31 in its 119-year history. In the mid-1990s, the Utes evolved from a conference contender to a na onal force and they now play to sold-out crowds in 45,017-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium. The original "BCS Buster," Utah is 2-0 in BCS bowl games with wins over Alabama (2009 Sugar Bowl) and Pi sburgh (2005 Fiesta Bowl). The Utes won nine consecu ve bowl games from 1999-2009, tying for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history and the longest since Florida State won a record 11 straight from 1985-96. Utah has finished in the na on's Top 25 six mes, including a No. 2 ranking in 2008 and a No. 4 finish in 2004. Men's Basketball has thrived throughout its history, winning an NCAA Championship in 1944 and finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 1998. Utah, which also won na onal championships in 1916 (AAU) and 1947 (NIT), has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 nine mes. The Utes rank in the top 15 in the na on in all- me victories (1,685) and sixth in regular-season conference tles (29). Utah's 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 NCAA Tournament wins rate among the top 25 programs. Women's Gymnas cs boasts 10 na onal championships and eight runner-up finishes. Utah holds every gymnas cs a endance record, averaging more than 11,000 fans a home meet for the past 22 years and nearly 14,000 over the past four years. In fact, Utah won its third NCAA women's all-sports season a endance tle in 2013, averaging 14,349 fans to its home meets. Women's Basketball has averaged over 20 wins a season since its start back in 1974-75. The Ute women have received 17 NCAA Tournament invites since 1982-advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. They have won 22 conference championships. Utah was the WNIT runner-up in 2013. The Men's and Women's Ski Team has captured 10 NCAA Championships, including five in the 1980s and three in the 1990s. Volleyball has par cipated in 10 of the last 15 NCAA Tournaments with two Sweet 16 finishes. So ball has qualified for the postseason 18 mes (13 NCAA) and has five College World Series appearances (four NCAA). Women's Soccer has played in the NCAA Tournament in five of the last 11 years. Baseball won the 2009 Mountain West Conference tournament and claimed two victories at the NCAA Regional. TWO NO. 1 PICKS IN THE SAME YEAR Utah made NCAA history in 2004-05 when it became the only school ever to produce a No. 1 NFL and NBA dra pick in the same year. Quarterback Alex Smith was taken by the San Francisco 49ers and center Andrew Bogut went to the Milwaukee Bucks. U TA H U T E S . C O M 7 UTAH SWIMMING AND DIVING The latest chapter in Ute athletics history began on July 1, 2011, when Utah officially became a member of the Pac-12 Conference.
