Summary: | This paper examines key factors in the identification and selection of Antarctic protected areas. In doing so it is realised that the study of the Protected Area System provides a valuable and strategic insight into the complexity of Antarctic natural resources management. Firstly, the paper summarises some key factors in the evolution of the range of protected area categories. Secondly, the issues affecting identification and selection are discussed, including the contributions and interactions of the agencies involved. Finally, recommendations are made for ways and means of improving the identification and selection of categories introduced to the Antarctic Treaty Area since 1989. |
