Inaccordancewithseasonalriverrun-off,woodwasmoreabundantalongthecontinentalcoastin winter(rainyseason)andinthePatagonianfjordsduringthespringsurveys(snowmelt).Densitiesofthe twofloatingkelpspeciesweresimilaralongthecontinentalcoast,withoutaclearseasonalpattern.M. pyrifera densitiesincreasedtowardsthesouth,peakinginthePatagonianfjords,whereitwasdominantover D. antarctica. Densitiesof M. pyrifera in thePatagonianfjordswerehighestinspring.Correlationanalysesbetweentheabundancesoffloatingobjectsandthedistancetothenearestsourceswere generallynon-significant,suggestingthatpost-supplyprocessesaffectthedistributionofthefloating objectsinthestudyregion.Theidentificationofseveralmajorretentionzonessupportsthisidea.Accumulationareasoffloatingobjectsappeartobemorecommoninthefjordzones.Ingeneral,the resultsunderscoretheabundanceoffloatingobjectsthroughoutthestudyregionandthefactthatfloating marinedebrissourcesaremostlylocal,whereasfloatingalgaemaybedispersedovergreaterdistances.Futurestudiesshouldfocusontheecologicalroleoffloatingobjectsinbiotadispersalandnutrientcycling.
