Summary:We present preliminary results from the Sea Ice Physicsand Ecosystems eXperiment, SIPEX-2, that will be usedfor the calibration of Cryosat-2 sea ice products in EastAntarctica. We encountered difficult sea ice conditionswith sea ice thickness exceeding 5 m over large areas,due to highly deformed sea ice floes consisting of manyunconsolidated blocks. In addition, snow load on top thesea ice ranged between 0.5 m and 1m in general, withnegative sea ice freeboard common in the study area.
