Antarctic sea ice in 2012was characterized by generallyabove-average area and extentthroughout the year, comparedto the 19812010 mean, with theexception of late May throughearly June and late Novemberthrough much of December(Fig. 6.8a). A new maximum seaice extent was recorded duringSeptember (since satellite recordsbegan in 1978; see http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews).Regionally, the pattern of seaice variability throughout theyear was closely associated withvariations in large-scale atmosphericand oceanic circulationpatterns and related local seasurface temperatures.
