The mechanisms by which oceanic heat is delivered to Antarctic ice shelves are a major source of uncertainty when assessing the response of the Antarctic ice sheet to climate change. The Fimbul Ice Shelf is situated at the prime meridian and is the sixth largest ice shelf in Antarctica. The regional oceanography in the vicinity of the Fimbul seems to be typical for ice shelves along the the Eastern Weddell Sea.
