Summary: | Atlanic salmon are the major aquaculture species in Tasmania. Preliminary research has suggested that oxygen regulation occurs in Atlantic salmon to low levels of dissolved oxygen indicating that regulation may also be an indicator of hypoxia tolerance. Therefore, a series of experiments were conducted to confirm whether the Tasmanian population of Atlantic salmon were capable of regulating their metabolic rate under progressive hypoxic regulation. Additional experiments were conducted to determine if regulation continued through seawater transfer, how individuals recover from a hypoxic event and to determine critical thresholds in a number of physiological parameters in order to define a hypoxic event. |
