H.G. Ponting was the official photographer on Capt. Scotts last expedition. Anenigmatic man, he was already an international success before Antarctica, and hadfashioned for himself a world photographer persona which was deeply important tohim. He had difficulty, however, in sustaining close relationships. In the closedenvironment of Antarctica, that construction of identity was reinforced, his skillswere developed to their highest point, and personal and professional identitiesmerged further. This paper examines the literature, correspondence and Pontingphotographs to throw further light on the man and his outstanding work.
