Plovidba polarnim područjima zbog velike prisutnosti leda je veoma otežana i naporna. Led je važan meteorološko-oceanološki čimbenik koji predstavlja stvarnu opasnost u plovidbi zbog utjecaja samog leda na manevarske sposobnosti broda, stabilnost, oplatu i sigurnost broda. Od posade se zahtjeva da bude dobro obučena i iskusna. Priprema broda, dobra obučenost posade i pravilno planiranje putovanja su neophodni za sigurnu plovidbu. Od izuzetne je važnosti suradnja sa službama za nadzor kretanja leda i ledolomcima. Brodovi koji plove područjima pod ledom moraju udovoljavati zahtjevima klasifikacijskih društava. Navigation in polar regions is very difficult and intense due to the large presence of ice. Ice is an important meteorological-oceanological factor which represents real danger in navigation due to the impact of ice on the maneuverability of the ship, stability, hull and ship safety. The crew is required to be well-trained and experienced. Vessel preparation, well-trained crew and proper passage planning are essential for safe navigation. It is of utmost importance to co-operate with ice patrols and icebreakers. Vessels navigating in ice covered waters need to comply with the requirements of classification societies.
