The law of the sea recognizes the different powers of States with respect to the diverse maritime areas that are adjacent to their coasts. The Antarctic Treaty recognizes both claims to sovereignty and the non recognition of this sovereignty. Is it lawful to delimite maritime areas in the waters surrounding Antarctica? If so, how can international law of the sea be applied in Antarctica?
