Genaue Modelle der geodynamisch-tektonischen Entwicklung enthalten einige der wichtigsten Parameter für das Verständnis und die Rekonstruktion der Paläoumgebung. Geophysikalische Untersuchungen der Sedimentabfolgen und des darunter liegenden Grundgebirges des Schelfs und des Abhangs der südlichen Amundsensee, der Pine Island Bay und des angrenzenden Kontinentalanstiegs ermöglichen Rekonstruktionen der Entstehung tektonischer und älterer Sedimentprozesse. Im Rahmen eines Kooperationsprojekts zwischen dem Vernadsky-Institut in Moskau (Dr. Gleb Udintsev) und dem AWI werden folgende Ziele verfolgt: • Identifizierung der Grenzen zwischen vermuteten Krustenblöcken und Vulkanzonen in Pine Island Bay. Es wird angenommen, dass sich die Gletschertäler und die Pine Island Bay entlang solcher tektonischen Grenzen entwickelt haben. • Während und nach der Trennung vom Chatham Rise und dem Campbell Plateau (Neuseeland) entwickelte sich der Kontinentalrand des Marie-Byrd-Landes als passiver Rand, wahrscheinlich begleitet von intensivem Vulkanismus. Die Frage ist, ob dieser Vulkanismus hauptsächlich während des Rift-Prozesses oder in Post-Rift-Phasen auftrat oder ob er sich im Zusammenhang mit dem Westantarktischen Rift-System entwickelte. • Aufzeichnung der Sedimentsequenzen über den Schelf, den Hang und den Kontinentalanstieg unter Verwendung von Tiefenreflexionsseismik, Sub-Bottom-Profiler (Parasound) und Swath-Bathymetrie (Hydrosweep), um ein Sedimentationsmodell abzuleiten. • Kartierung des akustischen Grundgesteins und seiner Struktur mit Tiefenseismik-Reflexionsmethoden, um die tektonischen Geometrien und Randbedingungen zu erhalten, die zum Verständnis des Sedimenttransports und der Ablagerungsprozesse erforderlich sind.
